Does anyone else have separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) from pregnancy or other reasons? You would know if you have them because there feels like two bands on either side of your abdomen and then several fingers width (or more) of nothing in between?

I have enormous babies and they have stretched me out completely (10lbs 9oz, 10 lbs 7oz, etc ). Has anyone repaired these with the exercises recommended? Someone with this condition cannot do crutches and such until these muscles are repaired.

Just wondered if anyone else has these and if you've had success with the repairwork (and what did you do to repair them?)

I have this. Some day I'll worry about doing the repair work. it doesn't interfere with my life in any way so I don't worry about it. I have pretty big babies too.

I got Lose Your Mummy Tummy at the recommendation of Michelle G. I have yet to use it, but it is one of the things I really need to do. I have quite a separation since my last dd...she was 10lbs 8 oz not to mention the stress that carrying the twins all upfront did...and I miss those muscles! When I get around to it...I'll let you know how I am doing

Sarah, I have had this since my first baby (9.10lb then 9.8, 8.14, 10.1 & 11!!) and my gap was a good three finger space - they talked to me about it at the time (possiblity of operation down the track) they gave me exercises at the time too (all this is 12 years ago) but I have not done anything specific for it and have never had any troubles either.

I also have big babies and at least 3 finger seperation. I had some exercises I tried to do but life took over and I don't know if they didn't work because I wasn't consistent enough (probably) or not.

I don't notice any real effects except that at 4 years after my 11 pounder, I am still regularly asked if I am pregnant and on hormonal days or days when I'm disappointed because I'm not this is tough - and I cannot do chin ups or other things like that - but what mom of 6 has time for chin ups anyways unless the boys have challenged you to a competition that isn't much of a competition.

I'm curious to hear.

Yes, forgot about that..this can be a problem..I usually wear underpants that come to my bellybutton and help draw me in.    I can go to a Christmas party with my side profile looking slim and flat and leave a few hours after eating moderately enough looking 3 to 4 months pregnant, no joke!    (maybe I bloat due to eating usually off limit foods and the poor muscles show that to the max.)

Also in pregnancy I always look quite a few months ahead of myself - that must play a part in that.

Oh thanks for the reminder Donna Marie! I need to get my book out and start doing those exercises. I do think it helped me last time because I do not have as large of a separation this time.

The exercises I read about recommended taking a bath towel around your abdomen and doing a slight crunch while pulling the muscles together. You should do them every hour throughout the day for two weeks.

Now, do I wear the towel around my head like turban to make I sure I have it with me every hour???

Needless to say I have yet to do anything that rigid.

I started this thread because I feel like I'm coming apart at the seams. With each kid I feel like I have more screws missing (besides in my brain, that is). Those muscles actually are hurting with the stretching of my growing pregnant body. I wonder what I'll look like after this one. Girdles are my friend!

Thanks everyone at least its not just me. . .

I can't tell you how much this thread has helped me.

My babies weren't as big as Sarah's or Anne's but I had a 10.2 pounder that was 22 inches long and my son must have been 23 inches at 9 pounds, 10.5 ounces -the nurse who measured didn't stretch his leg completely and he's one chunk of love - almost at my shoulder at 6 years old and strong!

My first child was 8lbs 14oz and my 3rd was 9lbs 8 oz and they were both 21 inches. I'm 5'4" and short waisted. I always thought something was just wrong with me.

At Christmas I was asked if I were expecting.

Thank you for starting this thread - it comforted me.

I felt my muscles separate! It happened with my 3rd ds. Felt like an intense burning, right down the middle of my abdomen. He was an even 10 pounds.

I would like to check out the exercises, but my doc said that to "cure" it would require surgery. There isn't much to worry about, physically, except a hernia. If you had that, then insurance would take care of the surgery cost. But, my doc also said, that surgery should not be considered until "child-bearing" is done. Basically, you wouldn't want to get it repaired, and then have it happen all over again.

I have definitely gotten the pregnant comment when not.

I found that my library has the "Mummy Tummy" book, but it is checked out. I will put a request for it! Even if I can't "cure" it, exercise sure can't hurt!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion!

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

The book/recommendations I had started with lying on your stomach right after the baby was born - only problem I had with that was that I needed to nurse my baby pretty regularly and that's hard to do lying on your stomach. Then it was followed by something akin to what Sarah described - minus the towel. You were supposed to be in bed doing partial scrunches while squeezing the two parts together. Now who is in bed with a few month old baby and many toddlers and especially not many, many times per day? My dc were much too busy for such!!! I'll have to look into the other book recommendation. It wouldn't hurt to do some exercise that is reasonable.

Me, too. . . And I have an umbilical hernia which feels like a dime sized hole right over my belly button. I feel like everything is just going to pop out!

Just wondering if anyone has went further with this? I am looking into a diastasis splint for my tummy. I am split from near my sternum down to my pelvic bone.
I have been researching it tons. And just looking for some more real life experiences.
