Anyone have any tried and true foods that settle a nauseus stomach? Ben (10) has thrown up about twenty times since this morning. Isn't keeping anything down, regardless of what I give him. I have tried crackers, toast, etc. but it all comes back up as does the water, tea, etc. Now he has dry heaves and is spitting up yellow which may be bile?

We use the homeopathic remedy Ipeca when we are nauseus but it is not doing the trick yet today.

He did not eat anything different from the rest of the family so I do not think it is food poisoning. He has done this before if he eats too many refined carbs before bed. But usually it ends by noon, maybe happens three times a year after a birthday party or some other gathering where he eats too many sweets/snacks.

Any ideas?

Oh poor little guy, I'm so sorry he's sick. Something is going around Rebecca, today, 6 of my 8 are ill, just two are vomiting though.

We've been doing lots of tea, (chamomille, peppermint and ginger) smoothies have gone over well, we had egg drop soup last night for dinner (stayed down okay) a few are sipping sprite with extra lemon. UGH! Don't ya hate having sick kids?

I'll be praying for Ben and you!

Maybe tiny sips of water- 1 tsp every 5 minutes.
When pg I sometimes am able to stop dry heaves by smashing bread in my mouth between heaves. It doesn't stay down but the heaves may stop for awhile.

Have you tried ginger ale? Chicken broth or soup?

Water is hard on the stomach.

It sounds a little like some low blood sugar symptoms. My nephew when his stomach is empty for too long can't keep anything down, and sometimes it takes a day or two for him to feel better.

If it is a bug, keep him hydrated. Even if it keeps coming up, it means he's at least getting some fluids.

Dear friends, thank you for the suggestions and prayers. We've done tea and water though neither have stayed down. He will not drink pop (soda) or any kind of broth.

Oops getting called again...

Oh, poor him and poor you!

How about *flat* lemonade? or flat coke? That's worked really well for our lot (and me too). Shake the bottle gently until the bubbles are gone. Ours don't normally have sugary drinks like that but it seems just the ticket with a tummy bug.

Praying for you.

Oh, Rebecca...
I had my 9 yr old throwing up last night.

Sprite! Sprite! Sprite!
A dry piece of toast and chicken noodle soup. They can sip the soup in teaspoons throughout the day.

These are all good remedies. Another that I know of is fresh ginger tea (just steep chopped ginger) or when I worked at restaurant with a bar a lot of people would use soda water with a dash of bitters. I know, it's not something you have lying around . I hope he's feeling better soon

My daughter had a bug like that last winter and ended up getting quite dehydrated and needed IV fluids after vomiting who-knows-how-many-times over the course of a day. She is littler than your guy, though. At least he'll be able to tell you if he gets to feeling *that spent. My memories of my daughter's sickenss are still vivid...Poor guy. How awful for both of you.

Not sure if its been listed above but dh (a doc) says never give water if someone is throwing up because "free water" as he calls it can actually cause dehydration since it won't stay down and I don;t know the medical reason why. As awful as it may sound I would start with sips od gatorade or even better if he'll drink it-pedialite. Pedialyte makes popsicles.

I know gatorade is junkie, but you want to get him over that hump. I would give no food until he can keep down liquids and then its the BRAT diet (bananas, Rice, applesauce, toast) until he can tolerate that and then its really simple foods from there on. They say to wait 1-2 weeks for dairy product because you can get a lactose intolerance from these viruses. Its the lactose in dairy products that can't be tolerated. Dh has bought lactose free milk with sone kids who have had it really bad.

Proceed slowly. . .

Rebecca,
What about Sports Drinks? I use Shaklee's Performance sports drink. It's better for the stomach and gets in the system faster than water. My sweet 91 year old neighbor lady swears by 7-Up for upset stomachs. And she is most definitely not a pop drinker!
Hope he's better soon,
God bless,
Angela

If you give any drinks such as Sprite, 7Up or Ginger Ale, they should be flat. The carbonation can cause some additional stomach upset.

All my pediatricians have always recommended trying to get them to keep only a teaspoon of liquid(maybe Gatorade or something similar) every 15 minutes.

For mine, they would throw up everything until the stomach bug had run its course. The stomach does really need a rest after going through such a stress. (Even my dh, a vet, recommends this to his clients.)

Jello, popsicles, saltine cracker, dry toast, etc. should be tried first.

This type of sickness is always a big stress -especially if it's contagious. Try to keep the little ones away. Encourage lots of handwashing and disinfect everything within reason.

I will pray for you and your family. After suffering with stomach problems for four months, I know how miserable it is to be so sick--and how hard it is for the family.

Here is what we have tried (all at separate times):

Water
Peppermint Tea
Dry toast
Peanut butter toast
Banana
Lemon Lime Pop, flat
Small cubes of cheese
Chicken broth
Crackers
Chamomile tea
Cucumbers (by request)

All with no positive results.

Oddly enough, he requested navel oranges about 45 minutes ago and has kept them down, which is the longest "stretch without a retch" so far!

Hopefully, this will be over soon.

Thank you all for your kind words and prayers

Love,
Rebecca

Poor guy. I wouldn't let him eat much since I think it could prolong it. . .just drink something that has a little sugar and salt like a sports drink.

My sickie requested a bowl of apples/cinnamon oatmeal and mash potatoes today.

Strange what they request, huh?

I agree with Sarah. It isn't important for him to eat. Just keep fluids in him.

Try coke or pepsi sometimes the coke syrup in it helps. No water!! actually at this stage of the game a sports drink/gatorade is a really good idea. How dry does he look? Sunken eyes, dry tongue. Remember BRAT bananas, rice, applesauce tea/toast. Hope he feels better soon. Annie

Ok, the oranges seem to have done the trick. It has been almost 5 hours since he last threw up. I have no idea why but he is up and feeling much better. Thank you all!

BTW, Annie, my little German grandma used to give me coke syrup when I had an upset stomach. I remember it was thick and sweet and it always made me feel better. Now the very thought of it is kind of repulsive but as a kid, I loved it! I don't even think they sell it anymore. I miss that, as well as camphor oil which cannot be found in any local pharmacy in these parts.

Isn't that the same stuff Nanny McPhee gives the children when they try to fool her into believing they have chicken pox?
