My dear sister has an infected cut on her finger. It is red and swollen, and has been for two weeks. The redness has not spread (it's on her cuticle). She's been on two different antibiotics. Just three months ago she had a very similar infection on her toe that required two minor surgeries to get it out. It did finally heal but that took two months.

She's very open to using alternative medicines/techniques, she just doesn't know any. Can you please offer me some ideas to tell her that she can try? She eats healthy foods for the most part, and tries to be pH balanced, something I know nothing about.

Please help if you can.

Love,
Kelly

We used Epsom salt soaks and homeopathics along with antibiotics (red line moving up to the ankle) for a wound my son had on his foot (it was definitely a tetanus type puncture wound that didn't bleed and kept sealing up on the outside without healing). My son couldn't even let it dangle so we took him to the doc in a child's wagon. My son was also recovering from chicken pox at the time so we were leary of tetanus shots. We had 24 hours to have almost complete improvement of the wound or we would have had to go the tetanus shot route. We also went to an Alternative doc who gave us some homeopathic remedies for both the chickenpox (our son was 7 days past onset but had had mostly internal pox and was talking on and off out of his head then going back to normal for a long time before reverting to talking out of his head - very scary) and the foot wound. I wish I could remember what those remedies were. I know one was a tetanus preventative and the other was for wound healing.

I don't know whether it was the homeopathic or the epsom salts or both, but within 24 hours he was about 99% better (no more talking out of his head and the foot was almost normal) and we were relieved. I do remember with the epsom salts that we changed out the bucket that he was soaking his foot in every 20 minutes. Every time we changed it, the epsom water was icky with the dirt coming out of his foot.

I now always have a bag of epsom salts on hand just in case.

She could try honey. It has antiseptic, antiobiotic and anti-inflammatory properties. Pour it on and wrap it up. Change it a couple of times a day. It seems especially good for resistant wounds in the research.Healing Power of Honey. Apparantly there is a super strain of honey but I have just used the local honey from my cupboard with great success.

EDIT: Have her buy a new squeeze bottle; this is more sanitary. Open it and pour it on, then keep the cap closed in between dressings.

I'll pray for your sister. Two infections that won't heal in such a short time makes me think that she might benefit from a constitutional remedy from someone in Naturopathic medicine.

Soaking it in hot, green clay? We did this once with a very nasty cut that was infected and swollen, under my daughter's finger and when we placed her finger in it, the infection spurted out! Powerful! Amazing! It healed without scarring too, which I think the clay was responsible for.

After releasing the infection, rubbing a good herbal cream would also be good, like Calendula, TeaTree or Hypercal (combines Hypericum and Calendua.)

Then maybe something to take internally?   Like Olive Leaf Extract, Garlic, Echinacea.

Hope it all sorts out real soon!

God Bless, Anne

I have never personally used it for something like this, but I would second the Epsom Salts. When my sister was younger she chewed her nails terribly and always had infected fingers. The only thing my mom ever used was Epsom salt soaks. They always worked.

If you can find any, a very old remedy for topical infections is walnut salve. I don't know if any companies make it anymore, but it really works.

Dear Ladies,

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and offer ideas. I have sent them all to her (she's in Arkansas) and I'll let you know how she fares.

Love,
Kelly
