Hi,
My dd, age 24, is pregnant with twins and struggling with vomiting. She's lost some weight and didn't have any to lose in the first place. Her OB has put her on Zofran and I was wondering if any one else in this group has used this, too. It has been helpful but she and I were concerned about her babies.

I have had to take Zofran with my past 2 pregnancies. It is a miracle drug if you are suffering with the constant vomiting, weight loss, total lack of fluids, etc. that accompany hyperemesis gravida.
It is safe for the babies--there are many of us out here who have to take it for HG. But a major side effect is constipation--like the worst you can imagine. If she can tolerate a lot of fluids, that will help. But she might want to ask her OB about a stool softener or senakot to help with that ugly side effect.
There is a great support website for women suffering with HG. There is a great deal of information on medications that help with HG, ways to cope with the illness, and message boards for women to support each other while going thru it. There are those there with different opinions & lifestyles than ours, but if you read with that "filter" in place, you can glean a lot of wisdom and help.

I will keep your daughter in my prayers. It's hard to be a joyful pregnant person when you're having to take meds like zofran just to keep yourself somewhat vertical. I hope she finds some relief, and fast!

I've had zofran, too. It did not help me until I was closer to 12 weeks and constipation, as said above, IS major. The worst I had EVER had.
I have heard getting zofran IV is better than oral. IV fluids with or without drugs help immensely.

My sister has used Zofran for three of her pregnancies and the babies have been healthy.

I took Zofran with my second baby. It really does work wonders, though I still had strong food aversions. My son was born healthy and still is healthy. He has food allergies but that was inherited from my husband. I believe Zofran is listed as a "B" drug for safety in pregnancy which is about as safe as it gets. Phenergan (sp???) I took with both babies and it is a "C" as far as safety goes. My sister also took Zofran and had no problems. One issue is expense. My ins. would only pay for ten pills. Any more were on me and at the time, they were $30 a pill. Eek.

I was given zofran once via IV when I was in the ER getting IV fluids with my first pregnancy. In a matter of seconds I went from severly sick to feeling almost perfect.
I got on the pills with my 3rd and 4th pregnancies and the babies have all turned out fine. My last pregnancy was with twins too, and I found that the hyperemesis was considerably worse than it was with any of my singleton pregnancies.
With my 3rd pregnancy I was able to make 15 pills in a 30 day time frame work (don't you love the insurance companies  ). I had to take a pill 3-4 times a day for it to do any good with the twins though. My dh was deployed at the time and we are stationed in England so family couldn't come help. I had a wonderful Dr. who made the Zofran magically appear in the pharmacy for me 
I will keep your dd in my prayers. It is certainly a rough time for her right now. Hopefully, it will end around the 3 month time frame.
Oh, one thing I did which made me feel better about the suffering was to offer it up for the soul of the child/children I was carrying at the time.

I took Zofran with my youngest. I had a miscarriage right before I got pregnant with him so the dr put me on progesterone as a precautionary measure. It made me extra nauseous so she gave me Zofran. It didn't make the nausea go away completely but it definitely took the edge of it. That baby is 2 now and is healthy as can be.
