Elizabeth:
My sister and I used to always put olive oil on their scalps for about 15 minutes and then wipe it off. Eventually it will go away!

One of mine had this really bad. The doctor told me to use Selsun Blue (not sure if I spelled it right)!!! "Absolutely not" I thought. Then, my hair stylist said to rub baby shampoo onto the child's wet hair and let it sit about 5-10 minutes. Then scrub it gently and rinse. It did work a little. I had to continue to do that up until she was about 5 years old! THEN, I was telling my sil about my doctor's recommendation. She said her doctor had said the same thing (about Selsun Blue), she tried it and it worked like a charm! I guess you just have to be really careful about getting it into their eyes, mouth, etc. Maybe I made too big of a deal out of it. It just seemed to be such a "harsh" thing to put on my sweet baby's head though!
Hope you find a solution. I know it is quite annoying.

All of my babies get this too. A few had it really bad. My husband calls it 'cradle crap'. I just let it run it's course.

Do you have Virgin Coconut Oil? I have had people tell me that it works wonderfully for them. I haven't had a chance to try it myself

All my babies have had it too - what has worked here is getting rid of it first with oil rubbed into the scalp 15 minutes before a bath. We used olive oil but next time I'm going to try coconut! Shampoo up well, rubbing a lot. Then comb out as many flakes as you can with fine tooth comb. Do this for a few baths... but here is what really worked - you have to brush (massage) the scalp every day with one of those soft baby brushes, and it won't come back once you have gotten the flakes off. At least this worked with one of mine (the last one, I hadn't heard of it before then).
My allergic children got it worse than my less allergic ones, and they were all helped by lessening dairy in my diet, but I don't think you eat that anyway, do you?

I second the olive oil... you have to rub it in really good.
You can also use conditioner, rub it well into the baby's scalp.
Finally, our doctor told us to just use a soft brush on the baby's head each time you wash it. You have to scrub some, but both of mine kind of enjoyed it
Use it in coordination with the olive oil and the OO will loosen it for the brush to rub it off.

That's what we call it here!
I add a little Tea Tree Oil to the Olive oil and massage it in their scalp. I also use a fine tooth comb to brush it out.

I used baby oil...back in the day... and I admit to sitting during those nursing hours and scrapping the white stuff off with my fingernail (always careful to avoid the soft spot).

Elizabeth -
At the hospital, do they still give those little white hairbrush-type things? They are about 2 x 3 inches, the back is just smooth, but the other side has stiff-ish white plastic bristles. The bristles are made of the same material as the rest of the brush and they are maybe 1/4 long? The point here: after rubbing the oil (olive oil, coconut, baby oil, whatever) into the scalp, if you brush the baby's head with this type of hairbrush the flaky skin will come off. It takes several times using the brush and oil, but it is a good way to get rid of the scaly looking skin.
Peace,
Nancy

My 3 all had it to. I remember reading somewhere that my diet, as a breastfeeding mom, might have something to do with it (refined sugars?) but I couldn't get worked up enough about it to change my diet .
After I'd put a little olive oil on it, I'd use a baby comb to get the flakes out. A brush does sound more gentle, but the comb would "grab" the bits.
Anyway, here's a link to Dr. Sears website about it.

We call it "cradle crap" too! I was told to put jojoba oil on it -- I guess that's easier to get out of the hair than olive oil -- which is pretty greasy. But both work. I also used a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the scalp. But this didn't totally make it go away -- just made it more subdued -- instead of all crusty looking. Now it's gone, but my baby still likes getting her head scrubbed anyways.

The cradle crap a.k.a "cheese head" is horrid isn't it? 1 boy had it really bad until nearly age 4. Really thick too. yuck.
Bridget has had it since day one, but it's slowly getting better.
I second the oils and nifty hospital baby brush. I massage the oil in while nursing, then at bath massage some more as I clean. After bath I use the brush to brush the loose flakes off while nursing. She loves it! She groans and digs into ther nursing and cuddles into me. Dh says it's hilarious to watch and hear her. Like a tired woman getting an expert foot massage.

I second the coconut oil! All 6 of mine have had it. I read somewhere that even if a nursing mama eats it, the babe's cradle cap will improve. It's not half bad for mama either!

My dc have had it and I didn't do anything with it. It always went away on it's own.

All my babies have had it, and I always used oil and a fine baby comb. My last baby had it the worst, and still gets a touch of it from time to time. This tea tree oil baby shampoo really helps tremendously, after the oil treatment. I also found it helped clear up excema on my 2nd ds.

All of mine have had it and I just let it run it's course. They usually have it well past two. I also am guilty of picking...now little Joe is big enough (14 mos) and he won't let me do it. Little stinker! We call it "the Cap."
