Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I could use some help regarding diet while I am pregnant. I have been working on being a healthier person and now that I am pregnant at 42 this is even more important to me. I read this article this morning:

http://life.familyeducation.com/postpartum/nutrition/35973.h tml?page=1&detoured=1

It was very interesting to me but now I have a few questions. For one thing, the author suggests eating lots of fish. My doctor recently told me to stay away from all fish because of the toxins. Would fish oil supplements be the logical alternative? What about flax seed oil? I thought that was supposed to be good but now I guess it is not? What about Evening Primrose Oil? So many questions! I really want to do what is right for my health and especially the health of this baby, but there is so much information out there I tend to throw up my hands in frustration, take my pre-natals, and be done with it. Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks and God bless you!

I'm also really interested in this topic, although we're still NOT pregnant.

FWIW, I'm trying to follow the recommendations in "Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition". I'm also trying to stay away from fish because of contamination issues. (What are we doing to this planet anyway?) This is tough for me because I love fish. My husband hates it though so he's happy.

If you go the fish oil route, I'd recommend using the Nordic Naturals brand as they go through extensive checks to ensure there are no toxins in the final product. Otherwise, my dh wants me to stick with the flax oil.

I'm interested in hearing others' thoughts on this.

I am looking forward to hearing from others about this, but I do know that not all fish is toxic. You need to stay away from farm raised salmon, for instance, but wild is okay.

As for the fish oil supplements, we all should be taking them! Look for "distilled" tablets, as these have the toxins removed. Costco's brand is a very good price and it has been distilled.

I am going through the same dilemma. The problem I have is that my kids between them are allergic to all fish and shellfish (anaphlactic), all nuts - and other stuff - the advice I have is to avoid these - so how do I get EFAs?

Why is flax oil bad? I had always thought it was a decent vegetarian source of Omega 3s...
