Can anyone recommend a good first aid book for kids?

I am hoping to incorporate a little unit on first aid/cpr for my kids this school year. I have Behold and See 4, which covers some of this, but there are no pictures and text is not very interesting.

I also have a Weeblos handbook that my ds used to cover the topic in scouts, but I don't want to bring that back out, as his troop folded when the BSA laws changed, and that is still a sad thing for us.

Following! I have been thinking for some time that my oldest would really enjoy taking a course in this, but I could not find anything offerred locally. For adults, the red cross offered a virtual course. He will be studying anatomy this year, so first aid would coordinate well. I might actually look into the merit badge offering for the boy scouts, but if someone has a better option, I am all ears

The Boy Scouts is a good resource. The hospital/ambulance company here puts on a CPR/First Aid that the kids can take. My oldest 4 are certified.

4-H may also offer a course?

You could probably find most everything online if you don't want to follow a particular program. (the Boy Scout merit badge worksheet that's free would probably give you enough info for what to include). With any program though you'll want to check on the current recommendations. CPR does change some.. much more reliance on compressions and not rescue breathing.. and snake bites.. lots of old info saying to suck the venom out.. lots of snake bite kits out there for the same.. it's usually worthless and can actually cause more problems than it helps.

Yeah- that is my concern: getting info in a book that is old/out of date.

I had not thought of looking for an outside class for this, but now that I think about it, it's a good idea. My ds did the Readyman requirements twice as a cub scout, and let's just say that first aid is not his thing.    If you get hurt with him around, odds are you are on your own.

It will be mostly new for dd, though.

Melinda, your son is not alone.. why do you think they do it as a Webelos and as part of Rank Requirements in Boy Scouts and as a required for Eagle Merit Badge?

Oh and I'd check the Red Cross for the latest books.. looks like they have some. And then cross reference with websites if you need more pictures or more child friendly info.

Ds and I took the Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED for adult and child/infant this Saturday. It was VERY easy compared to 35(!) years ago. There was no test. At first I was annoyed, I had worked so hard in the past to get that card. But, really, it is a good thing. Makes it more available to people, give them confidence, and really, you cannot do much wrong now with the AED machines :)
The first aid part was pretty basic and short. The book had more information than was gone over in class. it would be good to review a chapter a week at home.
You might call your local Red Cross or American Heart Association(they both aligned their CPR to be the same according to our instructor, I do remember some big differences many years ago). They might give a class for the younger set. I think the classroom for a few hours, while very engaging with video, skills practice, and discussion, might be hard until say 12 or so.
It would be so cool for them to get a card. :)
