Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DS broke his wrist this weekend. Its in a cast - one that goes over his thumb. So basically on that hand his 4 fingers are sticking out the end can wiggle but thats about it! Any tips? I am currently washing his one good hand for him - not sure how he can ever do that with this cast on! we didn't get a waterproof cast as they don't keep the thumb immobile enough and Dr said this bone heals poor and slow to begin with. I am not getting one of those swim covers as I have heard they can leak.

Getting our board games out and card games. 6 weeks in Texas heat with no swimming!

Hints are welcome!

My sympathies!

My then five year old son severed the tendon in his left index finger and was put in a finger to elbow cast three summers ago and forbidden rough play -nothing where he could have his cast bumped. It was weeks of constant oversight to keep him from playing too vigously.

Then there was week of brace wearing (still keeping fingers immobilized) but he was finally allowed rough play - that brace was soooo scatched up by the time he was allowed to discard it and start physical therapy. Physical therapy was interesting -lots of block stacking, Lego building, and gold fish eating (using relevant index finger) at home.

I've no particular hints other then drawstring pants/shorts are much easier to deal with onehanded then jeans.   Easy to eat with one hand foods avoids having to have one's food cut up like a baby (although your son mightn't care so so much). Allowing more 'screen time' and doing more reading to him were sanity savers when his wiggles threatened to do us both in.

Barb,
Don't know how old your son is but when my hubby broke his finger earlier this year he was in the same type cast and we ordered a Browed sports cast from Amazon (sorry I can link I'm on my phone) but it allowed him to take a shower every morning. This particular one was made of rubber. Not for swimming but will most definitely make life easier when it comes to cleanliness.

OK - I'm installing a hand held shower head with hose in his bathroom! harder then I thought! Going to have him sit while I use a hand held hose type head. After I bag his cast he can then rest it on the tub.

Poor kid - do you know how many things you need 2 thumbs for!

His game boy - need 2 thumbs; xbox - need two thumbs, we even have a Wii - can't for sure use games that use the controller in one hand and nunchuck in the other!

Both systems are old but no new systems can be used with one hand!
