My almost 13 yo has a lot of acne on her forehead and back of shoulders. I've been on the internet for several days trying to find something that can help clear her skin. She has used Cetaphyl and it dries her out. She's used their lotion, but then says her skin is greasy. Her hair is greasy, as well. So, what am I to do? I had mild acne and used noxzema, because I saw my sister use it. There are way too many choices out there! Any suggestions?
I prefer to stay away from parabens.
She tried an organic cleanser, Desert Essence, and she had the same result as with the Cetaphyl.
Thank you!

plain water and coconut oil.. my daughter would wash with just plain water and then use the coconut oil as a lotion.. it'll feel greasy at first but it has healing properties and will absorb with a bit of time so it doesn't stay greasy feeling. Any soaps that dry out the skin make the body produce MORE oils to counter it.
Also, could her hair products be effecting her? I'm just thinking something like bangs and hair on the shoulders.. might be causing reaction.
Also here's a search on acne and there's lots of suggestions there.

Can she try going all fragrance free for soap and shampoo (plus laundry detergents and dryer products?)
The coconut oil, as Jodie said, should be fine, but many times the fragrances in other products really aggravate skin conditions.
DHS makes a good shampoo: DHS Free and Clear, which you can get on Amazon. DHS fragrance free conditioner also works. They are expensive, but so worth it when your skin problems go away.
Oh- and Dove soap sensitive skin is also good for irritated skin.

My 13yo son takes 1 Tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar twice or thrice a day and it clears up his acne in a week or so. Then he stops taking it and it comes back, so he has to start again, but at least he knows what works for him. It tastes awful though, so you've got to be pretty determined. Putting it in a little water and sucking through a straw help a lot .

Jenn, like Jodie asked....is the acne near the hairline? My Mary Kay rep took one look at my daughter's pimply face and said, "Oh, you just need to put hair conditioner ONLY on the ends....don't put it on the crown/bangs/top of your hair where it doesn't need it. Grab a ponytail in the back and put conditioner there." She said it's OK if WE do that (put it all over) but the kids don't know when it's REALLY all rinsed out. So, she has done that and her forehead and hairline acne is much better.

My oldest also has acne and tried your remedy(she was coerced). It is awful and she didn't stick with it. But I am still thinking about it. Apple cider vinegar cleans up something in the digestive track, which makes me think that the acne has to do with the diet. Our skin doctor here doesn't consider diet at all: "there is no proof that acne is caused by food..."
Lindsey linked to a site that does consider nutrition.
Has anyone changed their diet and found positive results?

I'm glad she's tried it! If you want to make it more palatable, you can put a tablespoon of honey in 2 tablespoons of ACV and 1/4th cup of hot water in a big glass, to melt the honey, then fill the glass with cold water. It turns out more like a lemonade and is easier to take. She can sip half of it in the morning and half at night. I also notice that eating more sugar and bread makes it worse. HTH
