I'd love to know if you have any effective homemade cough remedies to share.
Most of our children have had a nasty flu for a day or two and then left with a nasty summer cough. Sort of a barking cough. Now I'm worried that the baby (2.5wks) has a cough, her heard her once yesterday and once today. So far very, very mild but still..

Not recommended for baby, but for older family members 1 tsp. finely chopped fresh thyme in 1 tsp. honey works well. Not the best tasting concoction, but we've found it effective for stubborn coughs. I have the recipe taped inside a cupboard door as a reminder. It says, "For relief of coughs and wheezing associated with bronchitis, whooping cough or other minor respiratory ailments. Take mixture orally as needed to soothe inflamed lungs and airways". Honey and lemon tea can also be helpful. Praying your family feels well soon.

Servant's recipe sounds like it is more of what you need than this one, Erin, but I'll add it just in case you don't have thyme.
I recently pinned this from Pinterest. She uses powdered ginger, not fresh. It might be a little hot for the younger kids.
MAGGIE’S COUGH REMEDY[/I
¼ teaspoon Cayenne
¼ teaspoon Ginger
1 Tablespoon Cider Vinegar (an organic one, like Bragg’s, is preferred.)
2 Tablespoon Water
1 Tablespoon Honey (use a locally produced raw honey, if possible.)
Dissolve cayenne and ginger in cider vinegar and water. Add honey and shake well. Take 1 Tablespoon as needed for cough. Hoo-wee.
Note: This is potent albeit watery syrup. It also doesn’t dissolve perfectly. Always shake well before using.
If you make this in small batches as the recipe is written, there is no need to refrigerate.
If you prefer, you may refrigerate this. It keeps as long as you need it. I like to make small batches (it is so easy to mix up.) and use it up in a just a few days.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE: This remedy and dosage are for adults. I have no personal experience giving this to children, and cannot recommend it for children. Many have reported on this site (see comments) that they have had great success administering the remedy in smaller doses to their kids. This is those parents personal choice, which I respect. If the remedy has helped their family, I am grateful. But it is not my recommendation.
Moreover,
Honey should NEVER be given in any form to children under the age of one year, due to the risk of infant botulism–hence the remedy should never, under any circumstances , be given to an infant.

Servant, hoping to not sound dumb but, do you think I could switch rosemary or lavender for thyme? I have fresh rosemary and lavender, not thyme. My 18 year old, who is prone to long and drawn out coughs, has one now that could use some help.
Oh, Erin, praying for you all! Our go-to for coughs is honey, too, which isn't recommended for babies.
Love,

You might try the lavender. Different properties than the thyme but it is an anti-viral.
and lemon oil soothes a sore throat too.. I like making "hot lemonade" to sip.. but anything with lemon and honey to sip should help.

For a baby too young for honey, I like a steamy bathroom and eucalyptus oil (external, you breathe in the vapor). A drop or two of the oil on the collar of baby's shirt (or yours, if you'll be snuggling the baby anyway) helps. Or you can use Vicks Baby, which just has eucalyptus, lavender, and rosemary as the active ingredients.

Thanks, Jodie! Sounds good.
Tracy, you reminded me of my favorite oil mix Olbas.

I forgot about eucalyptus oil! Our naturopathic doctor had us put it on the kid's feet and then put socks on them. It helps a lot with congestion!

No idea whether rosemary or lavender would work the same, but based on Jodie's mention of lavender as an anti-viral, it might be worth a try! Maggie's Cough Remedy sounds interesting Becky ~ I'm posting it with the honey and thyme recipe! Hoping I don't need such remedies after a very longggg day of four medical appointments in germ-infested medical surroundings!

In regards to honey, I am a huge fan of using 16+ grade active Manuka Honey...It's honey made from the pollen of the flowers on the plant that is used to make tea tree oil...theoretically, giving it higher anti-biotic properties...

We find this natural cough remedy helpful Gwens Nest Cough Remedy Also Vicks Vaporub on the feet. I make my own homemade rub that I make - olive oil, beeswax and eucalyptus/rosemary/peppermint essential oils. The little ones have warm baths, and then I rub this into feet, chests and and backs before they go to sleep.
