Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My mom's suffering from gout right now on both feet, and we've got a trip planned in April, so in anticipation that she might still have difficulty walking at that time, she wants me to find her a good cane for walking. Any recommendations where to purchase, or how to choose?

Thanks!

Based on personal experience with multiple family members whose health issues impacted walking, renting or borrowing a wheelchair can make a trip much more pleasant for everyone involved. If a person is experiencing pain when walking or bearing weight on ailing limbs, a cane won't really alleviate pain or stress on the body caused by bearing weight. Since your mom is experiencing gout in both feet renting a wheelchair might be a wise option. (Many cities have lending programs for medical equipment ~ your mom's doctor or pharmacist know of resources). If your mom feels uncomfortable with the idea of a wheelchair, a walker might work better for her than a cane, since it would help distribute her weight more evenly when taking steps. Perhaps her doctor can advise her and prescribe something that best suits her needs. One thing to consider most when both limbs are compromised is balance. In your Mom's situation, she would continually be putting added weight on one ailing limb to support the other if she used a cane. which might aggravate her pain rather than alleviating it.

I've watched several close family members accepting and adjusting to the reality of using wheelchairs, canes, crutches or walkers. In each and every instance, such tools helped them better cope with their infirmities in ways that allowed them to still live life to the fullest! By accepting the need for such forms of assistance, those family members also made life a little easier for everyone who loved them and wanted so much to help them! In other words, we don't always choose to use such things just for ourselves, as much as we might do so to make things a little less difficult for loved ones who are there to help us!

Simply sharing thoughts from a BTDT perspective. Please forgive me, Stef, if anything I've said doesn't really apply to your question. I started writing ideas about canes, then realized halfway through that your mom is dealing with gout in both feet, which altered my thoughts the subject completely. Praying for your mom and all who will be traveling together. Many of our favorite family vacations involved multiple wheelchairs, or various other forms of assistance ~ happy, happy memories that would never have occurred if family members had felt that they couldn't or wouldn't travel in such a manner. (One added benefit that always tickled my mother ~ groups with a person in wheelchair often receive special accommodation, at times in the front row!)
