Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DS (sophomore college) - is studying for finals and gets a nose bleed. I think this happened once last year. Not common for him, I think it is the cold weather (we live in Texas but his is in Indiana. So, how to prevent another from happening next week in the middle of a final (yes, I am already worrying about that!).

Any other reasons besides cold weather/ dry inside air. He doesn't have a cold right now.

Also, best advice to give him so he is prepared if he does get one during a final?

I just re-read his email - its the 2nd nose bleed of the day. Odd. . .

My brother suffered from nosebleeds for a long time because he had allergies and took antihistamines to combat the symptoms. (He went through allergy shots and had his nose veins cauterized...drastic!...but it worked well.)

I would suggest your son stay hydrated during finals week, bring a box of tissues to exams and study hard in case he has to deal with a nosebleed during an exam (pinch nose, etc., until bleeding stops - advice from first aid manuals would be good). That way, if he has to stem blood flow for 5 or 10 minutes, he will still be able to finish the exam.

He can talk to his professors, too, so they understand the need for the tissue box.

If I remember right, he's in northern Indiana - the weather has been weird, alternating between damp and warm and cold and dry. (My son is in Indianapolis.) If dorm heat is on, that dries things out even more.

Sending prayers! I well remember my brother's difficulties with this, and it's not fun.

If he's fairly sure it's from dryness he can get a good oil (coconut oil?) or the non-petroleum jelly (like vasoline but made from something else) and put a bit on a q-tip and swab the inside of his nose so that it won't dry out.

Also there's some homeopathics that you can use like apis and pulsatilla for stopping nose bleeds.

I also suffer from nosebleeds in the winter. The dry air is the cause for me. The best way for me to combat them is to stay hydrated and carry nasal saline with me. As long as the nasal passage is moist, the nosebleeds will not occur.
