Can you beat a sinus infection without using antibiotics? I hate taking them unless absolutely necessary because they wreak havoc on my system for weeks afterwards. I think I'm going to give this two more days and then head to the doctor if I don't improve or if I worsen or start running a fever.

don't take benedryl or other antihistamine.. it dries things up and won't let it drain.
pineapple (or bromelain capsules) help reduce swelling of the tissues
eucalyptus essential oil also helps open things up
push fluids! hot tea with lemon (or hot lemonade) are great
try a netti pot.. it's a sinus rinse thing.. I haven't used one but I have close friends (and my mom) who use one with great success.
if you're not pregnant, ginger and garlic capsules help fight off infection wonderfully.. not sure what dose is safe in pregnancy and I've seen conflicting info on it so I always give that warning.. you can use fresh ginger (great in a pineapple smoothie) and garlic but it's just so much easier to keep up the high doses with capsules.
if you do end up with antibiotics.. start taking probitoics (acidophilus) immediately and keep taking it for 30 days after you finish the antibiotics.. that keeps the good bacteria in your gut until the antibiotics stop impacting it (and it can impact it for that long)

Many years ago when I was pregnant I got my first sinus infection. I didn't have a family doctor at the time (just had relocated) and I knew that I wouldn't want to take anything anyway because I was pregnant.
So, I suffered with what I though was a bad cold for THREE weeks. I couldn't move my head. If I did I saw lightning flashes and incredible pain. My dh had to take time off work because I coudln't take care of my young kids. I was in bad shape.
By the grace of God I talked to a friend one night that told me I had a sinus infection. So, I immediately started taking Silver (natural antibiotic). I took about double the recommend amount and it was completely gone in 4 days. No kidding!
Now, when I feel one coming, or when I feel a cold coming on I use my beautiful neti pot always with salt and sometimes with a bit of silver in it. I have prevented many colds form really rooting in and I haven't had a sinus infection in 5 years!

I recommend the neti pot, too. I've had chronic sinus infections for years and have found that antibiotics don't knock them out completely, so that the infections recur more readily when I've do a course of them. I've had far more success using the neti pot, drinking lots of fluids, and breathing steam with eucalyptus oil to keep things open and moving.
I don't like to take a lot of regular medicine, but Sudafed does help thin secretions so that they can drain.

Guaifenesin (the same ingredient found in regular Mucinex) helps thin mucous without other side effects (I would choose guaifenesin or Mucinex with no added ingredients). I've heard good reports from those using the NetiPot as well.
When I purchased grapefruit seed extract there were instructions for using 3 drops in warm water for a nasal rinse (it states that you should never put undiluted grapefruit seed extract in the nasal passage). The information also mentions Nutibiotic nasal spray.
Hope you're feeling better soon.

I have been eating fresh garlic with meals, downing some organic ACV with the mother throughout the day, using RC from Young Living to help open up the airways (and spritzing water with eucalyptus oil onto soft surfaces), plus lots of water. I think I'm over the worst parts, but still have lingering congestion.
I've never tried the neti pot, but need to look into this some more.
Thank you so much! It helps me plan my attack, and I'm glad to know about taking the pro-biotic for 30 days. I didn't not know that the antibiotics lasted so long in the gut.
