Here are some really great reasons to take a walk today:
When you walk, you are:
1. Lowering your stress level
2. Lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol
3. Building healthy bones
4. Building muscle and endurance
5. Lowering estrogen levels and decreasing your risk of breast cancer by fifty percent
6. Aiding your digestive system
7. Burning calories- in the moment and for several hours after -your metabolic rate will be increased
8. Modeling good habits for your kids
9. Elevating your seratonin levels and improving your mood
10. Getting a fresh perspective of the world
Talk about muti-tasking!

Thanks! I just started a new walking regime last week (Dancing Daughter gives lessons, I walk while waiting for her). I will look at this list on rainy days like today and motivate myself to go out and walk anyway!

As I am checking my mail instead of walking. Thank you for the reminder.

I forgot to add one of my favorite benefits-
Walking increases circulation to your hands and feet!
I have noticed a change in mine since I started walking every day- no more ice cube fingers.
This also helps your nails grow faster. I'm a short nail person myself, but keeping every healthy is great.

Oh - I call them my prayer walks!
Soooo - how many miles or minutes for health benefits?
I walk about 30 minutes - was wondering (hoping) a brisk 30 minute walk enough?

Wish I could.... It was my prayer/gaol to be able to do this by the end of the year.

Everything I've read says a brisk 30 minute walk daily has you covered as far as health benefits . Even 20 minutes will do in a pinch.
Another fun thing about walking is you never know what you will see... in my neighborhood that could mean deer, turtles in the road, a neighbor in big fluffy pink slippers being dragged along by a very large dog

We did our nature walk, probably no health benefits like you listed, just a stroll in the paths.

I tried side lacing my shoe today (I have metatarsal pain issues) and it helped somewhat. That's so encouraging! It's hard to walk when you know it's going to hurt later.
I'll try the new lacing again tomorrow, and I'm feeling very hopeful.

Nope- even strolling nets you a lot of the benefits! You can even divide your walk into ten minute segments three times a day and get all the health benefits.
Some more great reasons to walk:
Helps you sleep better
Keeps you mind sharp and improves memory loss
Helps ward off diabetes
Decreases pain and increases mobility in arthritic joints.
Betsy-
I feel your pain about wanting to walk and not being able to. Walking definitely has seasons for me. When my kids were still young enough for a stroller, I walked just about every day with them. When they were too big for the stroller and not big enough to walk long distances by themselves,
a jogging stoller came in handy- they could jump in and out as needed, and it worked for bigger kids.
Then they outgrew that and there were days when I wanted to walk, but they wanted to stay home and catch lizards but couldn't stay home alone. That was the toughest stretch- I used a lot of the Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds dvds during that season.

Ugh. I keep seeing this thread but it's been heavy raining for THREE days here! I know I won't melt, but I'm looking forward to another walk like the long walk I took on Monday.

I just starter two weeks go, and husand says he already notices that I have lost weight...just think I have toned so clothes are fitting better, and it is a great time to collect my thoughts early in the day, and to pray the Rosary. Thanks for the extra incentive.
