My ds 19 is at college and this fall (like last) he is suffering from bad allergies (whatever pollen is in Indiana in the fall - he is allergic to!). I told him to take zyrtec and also a decongestant. I also reminded him to shower every day to get the pollen off him (I know, I know - I shouldn't have to remind him of that!). Any other hints! Last year we thought he was sick a lot and looking back and hearing him now - I think it is bad allergies. Any other tips I can tell him?
Allergy shots didn't work for him; nor did the cortisteroid nasal sprays.

Total empathy here.
Is he away in a different area than where he got the allergy shots? I've had to do several rounds during my lifetime and I still suffer from seasonal, but I find it's worse when I go different locations.
Windows closed, don't leave the clothes that he wore in the room he sleeps (impossible in a dorm, I'm sure).
My 8 year old is suffering so much right now, too.
You have to make sure that you keep taking Zyrtec. It builds up, so it's better to start before the allergies happen. Some people I know have taken twice a day when things are really bad.
We also do Patanase and Nasonex, bad season 2 x a day. The latter is another thing that needs to be on a steady basis to work.
When he isn't flared up it's helpful to do a Netti pot or saline rinse, but while he's inflamed it will aggravate it.
And then if it's really bad, Benadryl as needed.
And then Vitamin C and lots of water.

lots of vitamin C and lots of water.. seriously, your body uses up vit C in an allergy attack and the les syou have in your system the worse it can get and the inverse is also true.. if you have more in your system you have less reaction. It can't fix the problem totally for everyone but I know that I control seasonal allergies almost exclusively by taking around 4000mg of vit C. split up over the day.

My son (also in Indiana) is having the same problems!
He was not taking zyrtec at home but he's started it in Indiana. I will pass on these other great suggestions...esp. vitamin C. How easy!

I find Emergen-C an easy way to get high doses of Vit. C during allergy season as well as cold and flue season.

OPPS Just realized I put this in the wrong place!
But thanks for the suggestions! I will pass on the high dose Vit. C and water! I have tried him to do the Neti pot at home and he won't - so I have a feeling he won't in the dorm! Wish he would! Ididn't know that zyrtec builds up - I will tell him that. I think he quits taking it too soon saying it doesn't work!
Thanks!

Zyrtec is a long-term solution...imperfect in some cases...but you need to wait at least 2 weeks to see if it's working for you at all, faithfully taking your daily pill.
Flonase (nasal spray, by prescription) is the same, by the way. It works really well for me; ds has not tried it. We moved away from the place he was most allergic to (Italy) and he's held his own with zyrtec ever since.

There.. moved this to Our Lady of Good Remedy. I would have done it earlier but with my popup blocker I need two hands to do it easily and I only had one. A lot of my computer time is because I'm sitting with a little one in my lap
