I know the ideal is to have real food as nutrition.
But I have a young nephew who is struggling with arthritis like pain that has not been diagnosed. We are suspecting lyme, but since it was so late to discover it, his pain is not getting better.
He's finally willing to try the nutritional route, and gluten is his first trial. His mother is looking at supplementing with Vitamins B and D and Magnesium, but knows there needs to be a balance, like Calcium to absorb the Magnesium, etc., and not all supplements are made alike.
Are there brand names (not Shakly or similar types of companies) that are known to be no fillers, breaks down and is absorbed more readily than most being sold in grocery and drug stores? I have liked Nature's Sunshine, which probably isn't "ideal" but it's a better vitamin than I've found in the past.
It's weird to me to not be asking for prenatals. But it's for a teenage boy. We're also wondering if he should start with a regular vitamin and mineral supplement and then add on top of that the extras needed.
Any help?

health food stores tend to sell a better quality than grocery or drug stores. Vitacost.com is often the cheapest place to get them.
I have a friend who's struggled with something similiar ot Lyme's and not only needed to take out gluten but also the nightshade family (include tomatoes and potatoes.. peppers I think.. more..) but she's feeling tons better though it's a struggle to keep those out of her diet.

Yes, the nightshade family is the next target. But it's hard for a growing boy to give up all of it at once. I have found that I get similar inflammation with both gluten and nightshade, so try to keep them limited.

FYI-Corn is the biggest trigger for me.
In the realm of food being the best source, I find that there are specific brand names and sources I would trust for specific supplements.
For instance, I think that the best source for D would be fermented cod liver oil (green pastures), which, is technically a "food" but is taken like a supplement. This also helps with omega 3s, and maintaining a healthy omega 3/omega 6 balance is important for inflammation (so, if he's living off of peanutbutter every day or lots of nuts or processed oils, that might be something to watch even if it doesn't mean "eliminating" peanuts altogether. Also, maybe switching to pastured eggs if he's eating conventional).
For iron, I always suggest Floradix (also a food derivative) which is easily absorbed. I've never taken it personally, but they also make a calcium and magnesium formula that my midwife had recommended for insomnia. Since I trust the original, I would probably look there for easily absorbed calcium and magnesium.

Green Pastures Fermented Cod Liver Oil is excellent as Lindsay mentioned.... spendy but worth it!
I took Floradix because I'm sensitive to iron in vitamins... but found that it too, caused migraines in me.
The only iron supplement that "works" (does not cause a reaction) for me seems to be when it's derived from Brewer's Yeast. (doTerra sells this)
I love, love, love doTerra's Lifelong Vitality Pack of vitamins. They absorb WAY more easily than anything I've tried and truly make a remarkable difference in how one FEELS. (They guarantee your money back too!)
My husband has IBS, and is distracted and fatigued so often too... he has benefitted from these vitamins very much. He reports feeling more alert and focused during the days and he's not had a flare up since he began taking them last year.
Here is a very educational webinar on the vitamins.
And if you don't have time for that, here are a couple very short demos on how the vitamins destroy free radicals and how their absorption is superior to traditional OTC vitamins.
My midwife loves doTerra too... I use these vitamins for my prenatals. If you want more info PM me or you can order through me as well (though if you sign up for a wholesale membership, it pays for itself by your second order!!!)

Jenn I have no advice. My dh has Lymes and a whole host of other issues. It was not diagnosed for years and he is in pain all the time too.
His doctor has him on a TON of supplements, takes up a whole pantry shelf. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to give advice. There are things he takes that are amazing and for amazing reasons...and they all match together. After he had been to his new doctor one time, and started the supplements before any prescriptions, he had results.
Feel free to pm me if you want the name of his doctor (just in FX).
Prayers for your nephew because it's no fun and it gets worse before it'll ever get better.

OH and wanted to add, some supplements he buys straight from his doctor's office because they want him to use their particular brands. The other stuff, he orders off of Amazon and other places.
