Is there even such a thing?
Several of my family members have been struggling with dry, tight, non-productive coughs for what seems like months now. I am going on my 4th week, maybe 5th. I finally went in yesterday and was prescribed an inhaler (albuterol) as was one of my daughters. Same thing with two other daughters once each sometime in the last six months.
We don't take many meds besides homeopathic, so this is bothersome to me.
We've been using Chestal, a homeopathic cough syrup, but honestly, I've felt and am feeling desperate.
I've been using the inhaler for 24 hours, but feel lousy and still can't produce much. Maybe I need to give it a few more days?
I am also concerned about allergies in some of my children, which could/should be another post, and I'm learning that some coughs could just be allergies (rather than the normal itchy eyes and nose reactions).
I don't think that my cough is allergy related at all, but it's hard to know in the kids. I may have let my cough go too long without some kind of attention which is our normal way of dealing with most things around here. I also know it's been a particularly bad year for this particular virus (we've known lots of people with this dumb, dry cough) and allergies, too.
Very frustrated.......any suggestions?

Erica,
Magnesium works for my daughter. It works incredibly well in fact. If she consistently takes magnesium every day she does not have to use her rescue inhaler at all and she was using it several times a day before starting magnesium.
I don't know if it will help but it's worth a try.

That's remarkable! I hear of more and more things that Magnesium helps (poor sleep, migraines, chronic constipation). It seems to be something that most people are deficient in and it rears its head in a lot of ugly ways.
Also, whether it is allergies or a virus, boosting their immune system will help. Taking Vit. C definitely helps keep seasonal allergy reactions at bay for me (itchy eyes, ears, and throat). Vit. D is also essential for the immune system (and a good thing to be getting stocked up on at the tale end of winter (when we're most depleted, a factor in winter illness prevalence) and heading into summer (when a deficiency can result in more sun burn).
If you think it might be the lingering of a virus specifically, an anti-viral like elderberry might help, too.

Vitamin C.. it'll help with both issues.
It has been shown to reduce symptoms of asthma.
It reduces histamine levels.
It enhances the immune system.
And I know I've read it helps thin the mucus in the lungs to make it easier for pollutants to more easily be expelled from the lungs.. so thinning the mucus (making it more fluid) would also help what you're dealing with.
Oh and if you look at lung health magnesium and vitamin C are both being talked about.. usually together.

oh and for some reason I always forget but bromelain (enzyme in pineapple) and ginger are anti-inflammatories that will reduce swelling including in sinus passages and respiratory passages. Ginger is also a powerful anti-viral.
But ginger in high doses in contraindicated for pregnancy so if you might be pregnant you'd want to avoid it.
Ginger and bromelain work really really well together.. synergistically where the combined is more than the sum of the parts.
And if you want to go to food based rather than pill based.. a fresh pineapple smoothie with some fresh ginger grated in is quite yummy.

Thank you all so much!
Michele, does she take magnesium in a capsule form? How much?
I did just buy Vitamin C in a powdered form and will look into the bromelain and ginger. Jodie, I can get those in capsule form? Or, do you think having the real deal is better?
Lindsay, you'd think we were getting enough Vitamin D here in sunny San Diego, but I bet not. I feel like we're all in need of one big detox and an immune-boosting boot camp.
I appreciate all of the advice. Have to run.

Erica - the whole foods can be good but I've found that a combo of the food and the capsules (look for bromelain and ginger as caps) works best.. simply because it's much easier to get more in when part of the time you can just take the caps.
I found living in AZ that while you might get enough sunshine.. it's so warm all the time that you naturally get OUT of the sunshine whenever you can.

This is very intriguing, considering that I suffer from asthma, allergies, frequent secondary insomnia, and lately almost constant headaches. Is there a good multi-vitamin that would provide the proper amount of magnesium, vitamin C, bromelian and ginger? Or will I need separate pills?
Thank you!

You'd need seperate pills. The vitamin C for instance I take up to 4000mg a day.. that amount is still considered safe for pregnancy (which I have been more often than not) when not pregnant you can take more than that.
Bromelain and Ginger don't tend to come in any multivit. Though I think Rainbow Light prenatal complete has some ginger in it.
