Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm expecting #5 in a few months. After she is born, I have some health issues I need to address that I've been putting off for years and I'll need to not be pregnant for a bit. We've used the Creighton NFP model in the past but the health issues make things difficult to interpret. I recently saw that Marquette Univ. is teaching a new NFP course that includes the use of a fertility monitor Clearblue monitor . I'd love to hear some "real world" experience with fertility monitors. There are several on the market and, of course, they all claim to be the bee's knees. Please share your thoughts!

I used urine test strips for fertility when I was trying to acheive a pregnancy, but not for avoiding. They were pretty inexpensive and indicated the LH surge to give a window for optimal timing.

I cannot risk another pregnancy for health reasons right now, so we are currently abstaining. It is very hard, but there is just no way I can take the chance right now. I hope to begin NFP this year coupled with the urine strips, but this new moniter is interesting and something I might check out later.

Sorry I wasn't much help!

well, my first thought was that it would be nice to have additional information. But on reflection, I'm not sure it would do much good at all. It can't actually verify ovulation like the sustained temperature shift can.. so you'd still wait on the temperatures to show that ovulation had in fact occured. And having something that shows that ovulation might have happened may make you feel more inclined to not wait the extra time.

And it doesn't consider mucus in the early part of the cycle so the information pre-O wouldn't help you with knowing when to abstain either.

So while it might be nice to see when the hormones change and all.. it won't actually improve your ability to use NFP for avoiding pregnancy.

Now it might help a great deal like with my last pregnancy where the temps were so weird that I would have said the cycle was annovulatory but well.. he's 3 months old now so... but it wouldn't have helped for abstaining since you can have an LH surge and not ovulate and then have another LH surge later in the same cycle with a delayed ovulation.

We've been using the Marquette method for just over a year, trying to avoid a pregnancy; we have serious health reasons to avoid. We've been very pleased with the method. It's easier than the STM that we had used previously, and it's not as subjective
While the monitor itself (and the materials included) do not take changes in mucus into account, the Marquette method does.
The first month or two require a bit longer abstinence, whiie the device is calibrating. But we've found that our phase 2 is much shorter using this method.
If you do decide to go this route, I recommend looking into purchasing supplies from Amazon. They had the best prices when we bought our stuff. It works out to less than $10/month.
According to the Marquette NFP site

THE BEGINNING
OF FERTILITY:
1.
Fertility BEGINS on day 6 of the first 6 cycles.
2.
After 6 cycles, fertility BEGINS on the earliest day of "peak" during the last 6 cycles minus 6 days or the first "high" reading on the monitor - whichever comes first.

THE END
OF FERTILITY
3.
Fertility ENDS on the last "peak" day on the monitor plus 3 full days.
4.
After 6 cycles, fertility ENDS on the last "peak" day of the last 6 cycles plus 3 full days, or the last "peak" day on the monitor plus a count of 3 full days - whichever comes first.

I have had a really hard time with NFP. I hate mucus observations because it seems so subjective. We have had two oops NFP babies. I am now using Marquette. I love it and it has given me such peace of mind. It is objective and most importantly, it works! I don't even chart mucus anymore. I just use the Marquette monitor algorithm.
