Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am trying to figure out how to proceed with my hypothyroidism. I have had bouts of hives for 2 years, but for the last 6 months, they have been somewhat diabilitating, so I went to the doc. I think it has something to do with Hashimoto's disease, but my doctor will not agree. It is not my soaps.(I am SO hoping it is not gluten-related. I haven't been tested for that yet.)Secondly, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and have tried to take Synthroid and off-brand T4, but it makes me shake, sweat, and unable to sleep (even on small doses) and overall makes me miserable.

I know I could switch to Armour if I find a doctor in the area that will prescribe it, but my free T4 and free T3's are normal at least when I tested last. TSH is 10. I don't know if this will really help.

Does anyone have Hashimoto's disease? Has anyone had issues with taking Armour or Synthroid with Hashi's? How did you resolve it? I went on a elimation diet and the hives did better without sugar and much carbs. But I still had them, just less. I have been taking acidophilus, etc. but while I am plagued with the hives, my real concern is the thyroid and the T4 replacement. I have read SO much that my brain is fried. So much for my "fun" summer reading

Blessings,
Stephanie

I can't answer your questions about Hashimotos, but I do know that I had horrible hives until I eliminated gluten from my diet. They went away immediately and have not returned, unless I accidentally eat a trace amount of wheat, then I get a few hives.

Stephanie, I have a friend with Hashimoto's, and her symptoms sound so much like yours. PM me if you like, and I'll ask her about contacting you via e-mail. I think she'd be willing, but she doesn't homeschool and isn't on these boards.

A friend has a daughter that breaks out in hives as well. They thought for years it was related to gluten and eliminated it, but would allow some and the hives would return. They had a full blood and stool work-up (for other reasons) and found out that she is actually allergic/sensitve to eggs, dairy, yeast, seeds, and a few other things (I forget). Wheat or gluten was not a problem, it was the yeast, eggs, and dairy that she was reacting to in the foods. Just some information that you might take to your doctor.

She also has hives when she has any type of virus.

Sorry, I don't have any suggestions for you. Praying for your relief.

Hi Stephanie, I have Hashi's, had it for 16 years and I'm a bad case, needing total and complete supplementation. I struggled along with Synthroid for 10 of those years until I switched over to the Natural Extract (called Armour in the States) and a little of Natural Extract T3 and life has been wonderful since then. The big discovery for me through a more obscure test, was that my body was poor at making the conversion from T4 to T3, hence more poor life quality on just the synthetic T4 ~ this is a condition or problem that can fluctuate, especially after having a baby and my antibodies rocket up again.

I have never had hives though, but I think though that you can become allergic to things during a period of high antibody levels, I've seen this in an aunt of mine who has incredibly high antibodies..have you had them checked at all?

The doctor my aunt and I see, says there is a definite connection between gluten problems and auto-immune disease. I'm not so aware of this problem in myself, though I do feel better with less bread in my life, but for my aunt it has become critical to stay off it, she just had a colonoscopy and discovered she is suffering the beginnings of inflammatory bowel disease, which the doctor said would happen if she didn't come off the gluten a year ago..she also feels far, far healthier staying off it.

So I think checking your antibody levels is important, my guess is they are highly elavated...the doctor we see uses natural supplements to bring down the levels..

Oh please continue this discussion, ladies. I am all ears. My 11 yo dd has been diagnosed with Hashi's and it has been difficult for both of us. We haven't seen an endocrinologist yet so she is not on any meds save for the remedies she has been given by my s-i-l (a naturopathic doctor). Gluten is one of the items to be avoided, which is so hard for this child as she loves breads and pastas of all kinds. She has also been taking extra vitamin D. Can anyone point me to some resources that have been helpful for them? Thanks so much...

I received my results back today with the antibodies. They are high.

The TgAB should be less than 116. I'm 233.
The TPOab should be less than 9. I'm 713.2

So, I need to test for allergies now. I trying to stay positive about all this, but it is getting harder and harder with everything else going on.

Please pray.

Blessings,
Stephanie

Have any of you looked into the GAPS diet? I know it helps heal many of the gut issues you are talking about as well as other autoimmune issues. I am doing something like this now...but modified. I don't have time to post more, but here are a few links:

GAPS FAQ
GAPS diet

I know of quite a number of people that were seriously helped doing this for a time. FWIW

Yes, they are high...but still I'm pleased to read those results, after babies I go up to 2800 and my aunty who is really, really unwell with it, has had readings as high as 14,000 and that's when she was seriously reacting to things, I think her levels are down to about the 8,000 but still incredibly high, we are both serious cases in our own different ways. I know when mine have been in the 1000's that's when I've become allergic to things around me..when it first happened, I had a litter of pups, I am now very allergic to dogs.

But maybe it could still be contributing to some allergic reaction in your body.

Mary Shomon's site is a wealth of information ~ Thyroid Info and she has written some very helpful books, one of them is called, Living Well With Autoimmune Disease.

Many of things discussed on this website have allowed me to really turn my life around, living with a severe case of Hashi's ~ I feel as if I have been given my life back, and it has been like that now for 5-6 years.
