Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My children had a lengthy cough this winter. 15yo ds was hit hardest. He had a break from symptoms during January (interestingly he was seeing a chiro intensively for knee/running issues.) Now it looks like we all have a pretty generic cold (stuffy nose, sore throat) but he is...coughing...again.

He'll be seeing an allergist as soon as we can get the insurance lined up. In the mean time...what do you do to strengthen, improve a weak/challenged respiratory system?

And thanks for your prayers on his behalf .

Love,

coughs that last so long may be whooping cough.. you can have it without the whoop.. the main thing when it's not that bad is that it's just terribly persistent and will recur with other illnesses. (this is very frequently a missed diagnosis)

If it's allergy related you may find that higher doses of vitamin C can help alleviate symptoms. I can control hay fever in the summer for myself with about 4000mg/day often less and rarely do I need more or other otc meds.

If it's allergy, would some otc allergy meds help? or would they help if it was a cold too?

echinacea is a good immune booster especially for recovery since it's very good at bringing your immune system back up to normal but doesn't really give you a boost above your norm. You'll want to use this for only 2 weeks then take a break for a week before using it more.

there are some herbs that help with coughing but it depends on why you're coughing if they'd help or not.

some eucaluptus essential oil can help open up your head/nose.. you can add a few drops into a bath or into a humidifier or what I often do is put a few drops on a handkerchief and take it to bed and lay it next to my face on the pillow.. or just carry it around sniffing at it for a while.

There are some herbal remedies that are for kids.. you might check those out.. but we haven't had any real cough like you're talking about..

But what I recommend usually is on the fairly safe side.. like you'll get some intestinal upset if you take too much vit C but you back off on the amounts and it'll go away.

echinacea.. warning for people with allergies to plants in the daisy family
