It's driving me crazy!

Sunday afternoon I developed congestion and a bit of a sore throat. Yesterday I felt like I'd been run over by a truck! Last night each time I moved my head while (trying) to sleep I heard fluid moving all around in there.

This morning my ear is so filled I can't hear out of it and I'm dizzy. I don't think I have a sinus infection (I get tons of those and know what those feel like). If my ear would drain I'd be feeling tons better!

Any suggestion on what to do? The pain is crazy! I've read to try warm compresses....how do you warm up a towel? is it a dry towel you put in the microwave? I feel so stupid right now!

fill a sock with some rice and warm that up.. I think I heard you heat it in the microwave for 1 minute and then move the rice around and then heat for another minute.. not more than 2 minutes.

You can also heat up an onion and put the hot onion in a towel and that on your ear (the onion is supposed to help more than just heat).

Also sipping some hot lemonade might help.. it feels good and that sour/heat tends to help open the ears.

pineapple (bromelain if you buy capsules) might also help reduce swelling and help it open up.

eucalyptus essential oil.. a bit on a hankie to sniff or in a humidifier or such may also help.. it helps with congestion.

some warm (not hot! test on your wrist) garlic oil drops (or buy some ear ache drops) in your ear can also help.. plus it helps heal any infection. You just heat the oil (olive oil is good) up with some garlic in it until the garlic browns but doesn't burn.. then strain out the garlic and let it cool until it only feels warm on your wrist.

and there's always the otc remedies.. lemon cough drops, decongestant, benedryl.. just if you're still nursing keep your fluids up and only use it for a short time.

I've had good results with sudaphed for this type of thing. It's drying effects are really helpful.

Thank you for the tips Jodie! I think I may be sending my dh to the store this afternoon!

Tami sudafed used to help me tons but the last few times I've taken it I've felt like I was on some kind of drug "trip" so I've been trying to stay away from it. Which makes me sad because it used to clear up symptoms really well but now I just feel even worse when I take it!

Jen, are you getting the real sudafed from the pharmacy counter? or the "new" one that's on the shelves?

I had the same problem you have and
it was amazing how an adjustment helped.
I could feel the fluid drain out.

We do the rice sock in microwave, with a few drops of eucalyptus oil on it. I even send the kids to bed with these when they are conjested.

It's the real stuff from the pharmacy. I haven't tried the one on the shelves. I am feeling better today...a little while ago I heard a "pop" in my ear and stuff moving around. Not 100% gone but not so stuffed that it's causing as much dizziness. Thank you for all the suggestions!

So glad you are feeling better!

This is a little late, but when I had double ear infections while pregnant a couple of years ago (so, I was avoiding antibiotics), the doctor told me to put my head over steaming water with a towel and a few drops of camphor oil. It seemed to help move things. At the time, we found the camphor oil at the regular drug store, but since then, we haven't been able to and have found it with the essential oils at the health food store.
