Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. I feel silly asking (and admitting) but here goes...

Do you chew your food properly? If you do, when did you develop the habit? For those who don't chew well, have you considered developing this habit?

I have never chewed my food well. As I grow older, my already sluggish digestive system is becoming even more sluggish. Within the past few years, I've been hearing and reading more about the importance of chewing food well for better digestion, weight loss, food allergy reduction, and more.

Lately, I'm connecting this habit to the potential of gaining another perk, slowing down. We just completed our first week of full swing fall schedule. We have healthy meals but are rushing through them or talking through them or slurping them down via smoothies, bypassing saliva and thoughtfulness .

Any helpful how-to ideas or words of encouragement to help me and my family develop this habit?

Love,

I've heard that setting down your utensils between bites helps.

Or counting your chews (and chewing a minimum number of times per bite).

And drink a lot of water to keep up saliva production. Never drink to wash down food. Drink between swallows.

I've always been told you are not supposed to drink anything with your meal!

Small bites also connect with courtesy.

Oh my, I feel like we're a bunch of vikings at the table right about now .

There seem to be two camps on this. But my favorite article, written in 1916, gives a three camps approach, The Truth As To Water Drinking With Meals. It makes sense to me that some people need water with meals, most can go either way, and some need to limit (to include the elderly.) Here's more on that from Google Answers. Personally, I lean toward not drinking more than 8 oz. with a meal. I get most of my water intake outside of meals.

It's interesting to think about eating habits and where we get them, isn't it?

Love,

Caroline's idea to use a napkin ring may be jusst what we need to help us develop this habit while at our table.

Any other personal experience with this topic?

Have any of you helped your children to form the habit of chewing properly?

One of my children, who shall go nameless, is now turning all this chewing into a scene from What About Bob...mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Mom, this is deLIcious!

Not quite what I was striving for .

Love,
