I am 8-weeks post-partum. Not only has my lochia continued but last weekend it got worse. After my check-up with my midwife she put me on a medication for three days to help "wring out" my uterus. While I could tell the medicine was working, it did not solve my problem. So, tomorrow I am scheduled for an ultrasound to check for leftover placenta. This could mean a D&C.

I've never had a D&C, and most of the people I know who have had them over 30 years ago. Some very generic information is available on the internet, but my biggest concern is dealing with my breastfeeding 8-week old in the face of possibly multiple hours of separation and anesthetic in my blood stream. The unknowns are really stressing me out.

For those of you who have had a D&C (or any other outpatient operation), especially those who were still nursing:

1. How long were you separated from your family?
2. How long after the procedure before it was safe to nurse your baby again?
3. How did you arrange to feed your baby during your procedure, especially if you didn't own a pump?
4. Did the hospital assist you in pumping milk to prevent engorgement?
5. Any other advice?

they can give anesthesia for a delivery and you nurse immediately after.. this should not be an issue at all..

It's an out patient procedure.. they let me go home soon as I felt up to it in post-op.. I was in post-op I think less than an hour.

You should be able to have your baby with you up until you go into surgery.

Kellymom has great info on the meds and such.

If you're concerned that you'll be seperated too long then pumping ahead of time to get enough for a feeding in there wouldn't be bad.. have the baby fed with a spoon or dropper and you won't have any n!pple confusion.
