My 2yo is currently suffering with what I think is just a cold, but he also has some of the asthma symptoms he gets when he is sick. He was diagnosed with asthma early on and we have a nebulizer here at home that we can use. I have found that by cutting out dairy and gluten from his diet though, we rarely need the asthma medication. But right now he is really suffering. It is also hot and humid here in MI and we don't have an air conditioner. We've never bought one because there are really only 4-6 weeks during the summer that we feel we really need it.
BUT, today, to make my 2yo more comfortable, DH and I took him with us to do some shopping. He fell asleep within 15 min. of being in the air conditioned car and while in the stores his breathing was much less labored.
Once we got home it wasn't long and he was wheezing again.
So, long question here but, for those who have asthma, is it beneficial to have air conditioning? Does the humidity exasperate the problem like it seems to be doing now?

yes.. no one here does but my sister explained to me how the regulating the temperature and the humidity really help her dh and sons with asthma. You do have to keep the air filters clean though.

It's not just the humidity and heat; using AC instead of having the house open cuts down on the amounts of pollens that enter the house. My allergist is adamant that we (dd and I) are supposed to be using the AC all the time; however, he's not paying our electric bills . But, I should add that neither of us has ever had severe, life-threatening type of asthma attacks - we both just have a bad cough when things are bad.
The AC also decreases mold growth, by dehumidifying the air, and one of my big triggers is mold. We do run dehumidifiers almost constantly in our basement, which doesn't have AC anyway.

Humidity is absolutely a trial for asthma sufferers. Our now 19yods was 3 when we went to Sea World (in OH.) Typical August day, hot and humid. We wound up in their first aid office and then off to ER. After that, we made sure to watch all weather reports before planning days to zoo, etc. We have always had C/A since he was born. Sports in humidity are way more difficult, and he uses his inhaler regularly in those conditions.
We've had ds at asthma/allergy doc and it was really helpful to get all the prevention tips from him. Also, ds didn't have allergies when he was younger, but we had him tested last year, and he is definitely impacted by pollens and grasses, now.
God Bless,
Stacy in MI

Yes. We bought a window unit one very humid summer and the kid's asthma immediately cleared up.

Okay, I'm sold. The guy is coming today to give us an estimate. Now I'm just praying it's affordable!

My neighbor was diagnosed with an asthma/lung problem a few weeks ago. They live in an old farmhouse, which has a horrid furnace, even worse filtering, and no air conditioning. Within our county there is a community program that will provide an interest-free loan up to $15,000 for home improvements for medical reasons. Not only that, but if you remain in the home for 15 years, you do not have to pay the loan back at all.
They just got approved yesterday and are getting a new furnace, central air, duct work, and anything else needed.
You should see what type of programs are available in your area.

Ditto everything, Becky....with everyone but my husband with asthma, we wouldn’t make it without out A/C....even up here! I sure hope your little sweetie is doing better soon...that can all be disconcerting...
