Can anyone suggest a treatment for dry, puffy, chafed, irritated eyelids (upper and lower). I have never really had allergies, but after working all day in the garden nearly two weeks ago, I woke up with the ugliest, messiest eyelids you could imagine.

My normal eye cream (Neutrogena) just irritates them more. I've been putting on vaseline which soothes the tightness but doesn't help any of the symptoms.

So for two weeks your eyes have been itchy?

Or is it the actual skin, like an eczema, all dry?

I'm just trying to understand if it is your actual eyes, or around the eyes, the skin area.

If it is the eyes and if it is allergies.. these homeopathic eye drops by Similasan are wonderful.. soothing not irritating.

But if it's the skin it may have been triggered by the allergies but may need a different treatment.. like eczema as Jenn mentioned.

It's the skin around my eyes.

I am hoping to find some sort of cream that will soothe them - but I don't have here at home that is safe for eyes. Even the vaseline says keep away from eyes, but I had to try something.

Any suggestions?

My dd gets ezcema on her eyelids and we use Vanicream. It is over the counter. It can be prescription with some Hydrocortisone--we have both. It works for her and is safe near the eyes and on the face.

Anne,

I looked up Vanicream - but I didn't see one for eyes. Is there a special version for eyes, or do you just use the one for faces?

Thank-you!

I suffered with itchy, flaky, red and sometimes swollen eyelids (upper and lower - it looked like I was in a fight some days). My dr tried all kinds of remedies including a hydrocortisone creme. It helped for a time, but kept coming back. I finally made a trip to the dermatologist when the redness and irritation spread to the rest of my face. It was so painful! They diagnosed it as Seborrheic Dermatitis, caused by stress, weather changes, and even diet. She gave me a special face wash and a steroid creme that I put around my eyes, and I have actually started to use Aquaphor on my face at night, and even around my eyes. She told me "the thicker the better" for lotion.

I hope you are able to find a solution for your eyes, as I know how frustrating it can be.

To piggyback a little on Fuzzy's advice, Paula Begoun talks about mineral oil and petrolatum for skin care.

No special one that I know of for eyes. DD's allergist said Vanicream was safe to use on her eyelids/eye area.
It has worked wonders for her.
