My daughter, Pilgrim, posted on the prayer forum about an episode I had last week, where I had to go to the ER with intense back pain. They sent me home with prescriptions for pain meds and an antibiotic, based on the doctor's suspicion of a possible underlying infection. I'm now having a reaction to the antibiotic (which is not unusual for me). After reading Molly's post on her mother's experience with pain after shingles, I'm suspecting that the pain I've been experiencing might actually be PHN, postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain that follows shingles), especially since I had a re-occurence of shingles in Decemeber (after having four teeth pulled). Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with natural, homeopathic or alternative remedies for relieving nerve pain related to shingles? I've tried searching online, but our rural dial-up is ridiculously slowwww and unreliable....repeatedly having to sign back on, after waiting for the same site to load for several minutes, can be very frustrating even at the best of times. TIA for any advice you might offer. Praying for all the intentions of all you dear souls at 4Real.

Oh Servant, I'm glad you're back, though sorry to hear you're still in pain.
We're about to leave for our homeschool group. But I'll check my resources for you when we get home later today.

Ok Servant, made it back.. I'm looking in my book "Prescriptiong for Nutritonal Healing" by Balch. Just going down the lists and putting in things as I find them that particularly address the pain you're having. Also, anything the supports the immune system, or antivirals may have a beneficial effect.
Cayenne (you can get it in tablet or capsule) can relieve pain and aids healing. apparently you can also get it in a cream. don't apply it to unhealed blisters or broken skin.
licorice extract can be used topically to treat shingles and postherpetic neuralgia.
Valerian root calms the nervous system. Taken at bedtime it acts as a sleep aid.
Topical lidocaine may be prescribed.. there's also an aloe product with the sunscreens that has some in it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also found with the last sunburn I have had on my back.. that a glass of wine when it is healing and the nerves are going haywire.. helps calm things down considerably.. and once calm as long as I didn't do anything to start it again it lasted for a long time. So it wasn't like I was going around drunk. It was just enough to help me get the nerves calm and then I was able to maintain again.
Thank you so much for your response, Jodie. I have tried capsaican (cayenne) cream, but couldn't tolerate the burning feeling on my skin. I'll look into capsules or tablets. I can't drink wine, but maybe hops supplements would have similar benefit. I have to be careful with valerian, and many other supplements....they end up being ineffective after building up in my system (I think it's somehow related to being hypothyroid and having restless leg syndrome).
Thank you for the other tips and for taking the time to look it up. I've been taking L-lysine, echinacea, B-100 and zinc. The pain is improving somewhat...I'm trying to arm myself with ideas for avoiding or treating potential episodes in the future. Stress seems to trigger shingles outbreaks and I have a feeling the postherpetic neuralgia is similar to regular shingles as far as being stress-related, especially since my body was under stress from an unrelated illness before this all began. God bless you and thank you so much for responding.
Have you tried St. John's Wort Oil? It is a well-known herb treating all nerve issues. You could probably even take the capsules internally, and rub the oil on externally. St. John's Wort Oil is also anti-viral and anti-bacterial to keep from any secondary infections. Here at our house, I combine St. John's Wort Oil into the Boiron Calendula cream for pain and speedy healing. The Calendula cream would help to heal the skin. I hope this is helpful and wishing you the best!
