Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know of natural things we can try to help stop a stomach virus from travelling around the family, and/or help the one child that has it right now?

One dd caught it a full week and a half ago, I have felt low-grade nauseous since a few days after that (and I'm not pg), and this morning our tiny 7yo, who doesn't have any weight to spare, has been sick several times. So it's possibly a slow travelling thing? Or maybe a whole different virus this time...but anyway, help? Anything I can do to kill it?

We don't deal with this much, praise God from whom all blessings flow! But I don't know what to do when we DO go down...

Thanks

Keeping everything clean (as I'm sure you're doing) is the best way to prevent the spread of a virus. One of my friends wears a face mask and latex gloves when she's sick so she doesn't spread even one germ. Hand-washing is critical.

My husband takes ginger to ward off low-grade nausea. That might help you, but probably not your sick child...at least not yet.

I swear by the onion!

During this season of yuck, I take your ordinary, average onion, take the outside one to two layers off, then slice the onion in have, perhaps maybe thirds, and leave it on a plate in our main living spaces.

My parents have done this. Their parents have done this. And as the stories of yore go, viruses and bacteria are collected on the onion. And I recently read an article that can attest to this. Many a family were spared the great influenza of the turn of the century by keeping an open onion to collect virus and bacteria!

Makes sense to me, mostly because a great aid in ear infections is to "draw-out" the infection with an onion...by this you cut up an onion, wrap it in cheese-cloth, and hold it next to the infected ear for (maybe) 20 minutes at a time. Relieves pain, and draws-out the infection.

...In all my gushing about the little onion, I forgot to mention something.

You might want to consider supplementing with Vitamin D. There has been lots of chatter lately about this vitamin's value in aiding illness, and prevention. Only really necessary during these long dreary winter months when our bodies do not get what they need from sun exposure.

I use it and give it to my kids as well. We use Carlson's D-drops, which is the liquid form of Vitamin D and can be dropped into any beverage, or onto any food, and is a whole lot easier that getting my kids to take a capsule. The liquid comes in 400 IU, 1000 IU and 2000 IU (per drop).

Just a word though, there is speculation about just how much Vitamin D is good, and for how long you should supplement. I only use this Vitamin during winter. Spring and summer months we are outside enough that I don't have as much concern about their D levels. Studies suggest that this is why sickness is much more prevalent during winter, than in spring / summer. In won't bore you with study links and references (unless you'd like me to).

If you simply "google" Vitamin D, no doubt you'll have enough reading to do .

... something to think about ...

I'm having my dh bring home an onion!! How often do you need to change it?

We have the D-drops - I was lax about giving them lately I will definitely keep up with that. Thanks for reminding me.

I'm off to google whey protein! My 7yo (the sick one right now) can't take it - milk allergic - but the rest of us can!

Off to spray some more door knobs with rubbing alcohol . Too bad I don't have any essential oils here.

Thanks for all your advice so far - any more, keep it coming!
