Good heavens. I've never had a panic attack before this past winter. I never imagined just how horrible they could be. I've had two in the last week, since beginning to feel the other symptoms of my latest pregnancy.

Does anyone else have experience with this?

Yes.

I have found that there is a direct link between the gut and the brain and for me that is part of what causes them...my gut does not always absorb the nutrients it needs to keep my brain and the rest of me completely healthy. Ever since I have switched to a more nourishing traditions diet, I have not had them yet where in some of my other pregnancies I had them from the beginning. I have also found that it also has something to do with my adrenals and adrenal fatigue. I have to stay away from caffeine religiously while pregnant. So...in a nutshell, if you want something to read about what I have done so far, let me know. I know it is not the same for everyone, but I have found the trigger for me. I have found some helpful information on some of the NT type blogs in regards to gut health and I cant tell you the difference I feel. Hopefully I can keep it away this time...I am hopeful!

Could the anxiety attacks have anything to do with your upcoming move? Your house is the nest you prepare for your baby. You are newly pregnant and your nest is about to change and all the details are not set yet. Not to mention taking care of all of your other children, homeschooling, home business, hormones, etc...

I think God allows anxiety in order to grab our attention. He wants us to stop and reflect on what is going on around us and to draw us closer.

I have found scheduling time for just myself doing something I enjoy is so helpful in these sorts of situations. Also, stepping up a regular prayer time and journaling are helpful.

You will be in my prayers. Anxiety is a heavy cross.

Stephanie and Donna-Marie,

I'm sure the move, the farm falling through, and the swine flu we had just before Thanksgiving are all contributing factors.

I haven't blogged in months and I had previously found that VERY cathartic, helped me put everything in a positive light.

But I know that our diet (probably as a result of everything else going on) has suffered dramatically. I am usually very, very conscientious about what we eat, but we've gone to "muddle through" mode since we made an offer on that farm. Our time was spent in preparing to move, then illness, followed by holidays, stress on stress, on stress...

Donna-Marie, I'd LOVE to hear what you've tried. I feel as though I've forgotten everything I used to know. Distraction is the enemy of mothers, I'm convinced.

I don't have panic attacks, per se, but I do have very discernible changes in mood and thought patterns, with very real anxiety. Anxiety all of the time that is hard to shake, that is a constant cross, and prayer and attention to the sacraments doesn't relieve.

I definitely change when I am pregnant and I think the fact that I KNOW that in-between has helped me to push through. It is a constant state of having to choose with my will and not let the feelings take over, but it is an intellectual assent....that I must cling to reason, and to repeating the things I KNOW for sure. Ask someone that you trust to remind you as well with spoken words. Write things down and repeat them to yourself----- scriptures, truths, consolations, etc. Remind yourself every day that it has a time limit, that it is a fixed time and will be over, that there is an end. That there is always a new day and change around the corner.....the feelings of neverending-ness can cause panic, sometimes.

It does not always make sense and is such a state of vulnerability.

I am so sorry for what you are going through. I am very empathetic. To be so happy to be pregnant, but to be so miserable BEING pregnant is such a frustration, at least for me....I am a miserable pregnant woman. I hope this gets better for you soon.

Ask your doctor if things get bad; be easy on yourself. What your baby needs the most is a mother who is well. Get help if you need it.

This is a new perspective for me, but after having Katie my thyroid went south quickly. It can significantly affect anxiety and can be an equally significant factor during pregnancy. In fact, pregnancy is a common trigger for thyroid issues, I believe. I'm still very new at navigating this area. I wanted to mention it though so you could consider checking your thyroid levels.

The one panic attack I've had was when I was pregnant and in the midst of a move. We had to stay overnight in a large city which I'm not real thrilled with at the best of times during the travel from one home to the next. My poor dh.. we were just trying to find somewhere to eat and I'm breaking down in tears and no help whatsoever.. we finally found something that was familiar enough and a smallish place and that helped.

Thanks for the reminder Jennifer. I do have a thyroid condition. It's been under great control without replacement for many years... again, with diet and exercise. I will for sure get that looked at.

These panic attacks are terrifying, my blood pressure drops to the point of near fainting then my throat begins to close up and I get cold shots through my entire body before my poor heart starts to pound and my blood pressure goes sky high. Sheesh. Part of how I'm managing them has been to recognize that it's coming on and "talk" myself down... "it's only a panic attack. I'm not actually going to die"...

The one I had today I'm sure was made worse because Brian has left on a business trip. We both have so much to do. Thank goodness for my older children, they are very helpful. Unfortunately, the younger ones sense my anxiety and follow suit.

Nissa, definitely get your thyroid checked out......that all sounds pretty classic to me....esp. if you have a history of thyroid issues.
