I'm wanting to lose a good 10-12kg, I've been reading up and lots of successful diets appear to be low carbohydrates, higher protein (and fats fine too) diet. Anyone got any recipes, menu advice?

I did South Beach a few months ago and did the 2 week introduction diet and tossed 8 lbs easy. Then the holiday's came and everything just went downhill. I hadn't established my habits yet and we were traveling a lot.
During my SB days I felt great(got rid of all the white flours and sugars in my diet) and had energy and was so excited to see myself thin out a little.
Yes, high protein, low carbs but good ones like brown rice and whole wheat pasta's, and lot's and lot's of veggies.
I found some awesome and quick recipes in many of the South Beach cookbooks, my favorite is the holidays and celebrations book.
Once you read some and get the idea, which is fairly easy, you can adapt your current cooking to this way of eating. And with kids I always have some carb's at the table for them, even though I may have more salad instead. They even enjoyed most of the recipes, though they are pretty good eaters and like salmon, tilapia and such.
I think South Beach has a website too and you might glean some recipes off there. Sorry, I am not the best at this computer stuff but I am sure a quick search will get you there.

The Paleo Diet has quite a few recipes. I wouldn't cut out the salt, though.

Yes, there are soooooo many websites with great recipes, but I just adapted what I cooked for my family.

I went on from Feb 2 until April 20 and lost over 30lbs (13kg)...fast and soooo easy! I couldn't believe I could eat so much food (rather than skipping meals) but the weight continually came off.

stopped the sugary coffee and switched to tea no sugar (I can't drink coffee without a ton of sugar )

Breakfast: eggs, bacon, sausage, turkey bacon, any type of meat....leftovers --- I never liked breakfast foods so this was a first for me....

adapted menus...like having tacos wrapped in lettuce instead of the traditional shell. same with hamburgers...no buns...simply wrapped in lettuce. We eat a traditional meal of meat, carb, veggie and salad for dinner....I just dropped the carb.

I'm a salad freak, so having salad for most of my lunches was NOT a punishment. I added my protein...tuna fish, ham, leftover steak...whatever I wanted with the lettuce and other veggies ...cheese. I never measured the dressing. I put in what I wanted.   

New recipes came from a huge Atkins catalog -- I think the catalog comes out twice a year.

We had a favorite flank steak recipe with a southwestern rub (cumin, chili powder, lime...) it's in my Atkins catalog so I don't remember specifics, but it's delish. We've kept the Baked Salmon with Bok Choy. (had never tried salmon before!) There are some really great recipes in the catalog.

Snacks...hmmm...veggies plates were a favorite....(remember I'm a salad freak so it's not "diet" food to me) DH loved quartered pickles that were wrapped with a slice of cheese and meat. He still will request them for snacks or to be added into his lunch for work.

Sugar free jello with whip cream on top -- um, yes, that's amazingly delish to fight any feeling of not having fun food.

Deviled eggs were a good protien snack.
olives w/ cubed cheese as a snack

I think after this baby comes, I'll go back to low carb for a while.

We used to be big fruit and veggie people for years, in fact we were vegans for nine years and NEVER had processed cereal. I'm not aiming to get back to there but I've been thinking how slack I've become, how often I go for the convenience food, not necessarily processed, just easy. Not putting some more thought into the menu.

So with your veggie snacks are there any homemade dips allowed?

I did atkins 10 years ago and lost weight even though I "cheated" with oatmeal and banannas in the mornings. Plain yogurt with banannas would work too. Also, Spirulina is great for evening out the blood sugar, and it's high in protien.

Erin, dips like hummus, plain yogurt and such worked for us for veggies.
Also, something I never thought would work for snack was kosher dill pickles. I actually developed a taste for them and they really did decrease my cravings.
And I couldn't have fruits in phase 1 of SB. So I would put a little of the granola(and fish oil) in yogurt in the am. I have actually developed a taste for plain yogurt now. I never would have thought....

I eat plain yogurt. I have to say this Greek yogurt Chobani is wonderful to eat plain. And this yogurt has double the amount of protein, 14-17grams. It's still not enough to keep me going until lunch, but much better. They have nonfat and 2%.

I just started eating Greek yogurt --I like it. It tastes the same to me as reg. yogurt but I think it's creamier. I eat plain too but will often add come blueberries in 'cause those things are just so darned good for you (and don't raise your blood sugar).

site has a lot of great recipes. I would try to avoid the artificial sweeteners, though. My dd is on a modified Atkins diet, and we use NuNaturals NuStevia for sweetening flavored waters, tea, etc.

My dd has been on a very low carb diet (10 g a day) for about 18 months now, and I am amazed- in awe- of the health benefits of food. It is a powerful thing.

Dh and I switched to low carb/higher protein eating after years of Weight Watchers. I love it. I feel healthier and my bloodwork when I got pregnant showed some interesting and unexpected improvements as well. We both lost a ton of weight and maintenance is not as hard as it is for me with calorie counting.

Dropping sugar and bread was the hardest part for me, but I think it made all the difference.

I eat greek yogurt every day (full fat). Its so dense that a serving is only 4-6 ounces for a good bit of protein. I sweeten it slightly with liquid stevia and add blueberries as Michele said.

Greek yogurt is awesome!! If you make your own yogurt, all you need to do is strain it (I use a coffee filter set in a sieve) and it becomes Greek yogurt -- so yummy with some maple syrup or honey. Oh, okay, skip the syrup or honey if you're cutting down carbs.

I'm trying not to think of yogurt I love yogurt but I am dairy intolerant so have to limit my dairy intake and yogurt is always a no go

Erin, I'm lactose intolerant but can handle yogurt fine. But I know there are different levels.

Recently I picked up at our library sale books on the Paleo diet, and the Metabolic Diet. I can't get past that man wasn't originally created as a caveman.

I did find the metabolic diet questionaire interesting, because I fit completely in the high protein, low carb metabolism. All my life I have. High protein keeps me going...I cannot live on fruits and vegetables! Anyway, I found that blood type diet was also a bomb for me.

I read the books, but don't do much. I'm encouraged that pickles are a free food, because they are my favorite snack. Right before dinner I can't tell you how many times I'm stealing from the pickle jar, even as a little girl. I've often worried that if I have to go on a candida diet I would die! I need my vinegar!

I had just found this list of high protein snacks to carry around I thought I would share here:

- hard-boiled eggs
- deviled eggs
- poptop cans or foil pouches of chunk-light tuna, chicken, sardines
- tuna and chicken and egg salads
- lettuce wrapped sandwiches
- precooked chicken strips
- plain yogurt - cottage cheese
- smoked salmon with cream cheese rollups
- individually wrapped cheese sticks
- microwave frozen broccoli-with-cheese-sauce
- nuts of all kinds
- spoonful of peanut butter (I did this so much growing up)
- celery stuffed with cream cheese or peanut butter
- beef jerky (if it's not too salty)
- meat and veg soup made without noodles or potatoes
- egg drop soup
- chicken and coconut milk soup
- rolled up deli ham and cheese
- thawed frozen cooked shrimp

I so want devilled eggs and egg salad right now.

I also think I want to go to KG instead of LB, because Erin's number for weight loss looks so much better in KG than LBS.

For those that pursue the low carb, how many days does it take for you to acclimate and not crave the carbs, or have withdrawal symptoms?

We use Real Salt, which is different from regular table salt.

If you miss your bread/crackers- you can make your own "cheese-its" very easily:

One slice Kraft Deli Deluxe cheese (O carbs)
Line a microwave safe plate with parchment paper (the plate is key here- it has to be one that doesn't absorb all the heat... you know the kind that gets burning hot while the food is only warm? You don't wan that kind. I use a Correlle plate).

Tear the cheese into bite- sized pieces, place on the plate, microwave for one minute. The cheese is transformed into crunchy cracker bits that are very tasty.


Another quick snack:
Grind equal amounts of cheese and nuts in a FP. Roll into small balls and flatten on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350-375 for about 8 minutes or until golden brown and a little puffy on top.
These make nice snacking crackers. You can mix it up using any kind of cheese or nuts for variety.

It usually takes me 2 -3 days depending on how much I have been sugar/carb loading beforehand.
