Does anyone have the beginnings of cataracts in their ’40’s? I am 43, and just was told today that I have cataracts starting to form in my eyes. I also have something called “drusin”, I think that is how it is spelled, I have had that for eight years, sort of looks like macular degeneration, but not quite....So, I feel like my eyes are falling apart. Anyone know of cataracts forming this early, but not having trouble with them until several years later?
I’m going to knit and sew today....while I still can.. Probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to up antioxidants in my diet, since I seem to be aging quickly here...arthritis, cataracts...43, not 73!!!!!

I don't know much about cataracts but I do know that bilberry is supposed to really support/help the eyes.

Yes, a few months ago my eye doctor told me I have cataracts beginning to form. I'm 45. She also told me that Centrum Silver might be a good vitamin to take. (Great! I think of that for "old" people.)
She also said I should be using sunglasses regularly -- sun can contribute to the development of this particular kind of cataract I guess. The eye doctor told me it would be years before they caused any trouble.
4 lads mom, I can certainly relate!

I am 47 and have had cataracts for several years. I wear prescription glasses because the cataracts are affecting my vision differently in each eye. Every year my prescription gets worse so at my last check-up I asked when they would remove them and was told not until my vision is a lot more impaired. He said all surgery is risky and they won't do it before it is absolutely necessary. I am wondering if the insurance company won't pay for it until your vision is at a certain level. Anyway, at least this is a problem that can be repaired. Maybe I should try some supplements or switch to those "old lady" vitamins, too.
God Bless,
Barb

Hmmm...my grandmother just had cataracts removed from both eyes, but I'll have to ask her how long she had them developing. I know it was really funny when she finally had the surgery because all of a sudden she noticed that her clothes were all different colors than she thought they were, especially blue and purple things, and she wanted to know if I had worn her bathrobe last time I was there and stained the front. It had always been stained, I thought she knew!

Commiserations my friend. I know that I too am at risk with all the allergy meds I have had to take. There are lots of eye vites - i can email you a list - but with your food sensitivities I am not sure you can do them.

I am also commiserating with you also,
I was told I was at high risk for cataracts and glaucoma because of my past health problems--and the ventalator---i am wearing trifocals now at 44 and they get worse every year---I would love to hear about the vites to take to help slow this process down.

I am wondering if mine might be from steroid use for my asthma. I know that is a risk factor. I haven’t been on inhaled or oral steroids for several years, but I went through a period of time, about 8 yrs ago, as my last little had all of his health problems, and I was sick, constantly!! At one point, I was on prednisone, for a month, and on inhaled steroids for a few years straight. I am sure that might have contributed. I also wasn’t very good at wearing sunglasses...but I am now. My mom just found out she has them too, but she is 63....
I am thinking anything, vitamin wise, with luten, is suppose to be really good. Bausch and Lomb make a vitamin geared towards eye health. Like Marilyn mentioned, I can barely take any vitamins, just the “gummy vits” for adults. I am really good at eating spinach and greens a few times a week...probably should step that up even more.
Thanks for the input, ladies, hopefully, this will be something that is very slow to progress. The doc did say that when I do need surgery, the implants they put in will actually make my extreme nearsightedness improve greatly, along with the astigmatism, and I might only need reading glasses. I would be very okay with that!!

I think steroid use does play a part. Also antihistamines are not great . The supplements I have heard as being useful
- lutein
- Vitamin A
- bilberry extract
- carotenoids
I have heard too that sugar intolerance is a factor - especially lactose and white suger. Sigh...I am not motivated to give up my dairy intake. Also it is supposed to be good to eat lots of green leafy veg and blueberries
Also we can all start/continue lots of Saint Lucy and Saint Raphael prayers.....

I have had cataracts for several years. The majority of the time I dont notice them, but if I get really tired, or am straining my eyes a lot I become aware of the voids in my vision.
I have been told there is nothing that can be done for the type I have at this time. I took a lot of steriods as a child and that combined with a severe head injury as a toddler have resulted in the cataracts.
