Pretty much what Susan said.. low iodine or low selenium could be a problem if you're not getting enough, but you can have low thyroid function and it not be either of those. So increasing them might help, but might not either.

We are expecting in February and I was also diagnosed with low thyroid (3 "points" above normal). I have had no symtoms unless tireness counts, but having 8 kids at 45 and homeschooling takes care of that one 
So my doctor put me on an off-brand synthroid. I have lowered the dose to finally getting off of it completely. One half hour after taking the pill, my hands and feet burn and this is on a 1/2 or less of a tablet. The doctor will probably order an ultrasound because I am measuring way small. I have read SO much about thryoid that I am nearly burnt because there seems no "perfect" answer. Synthroid vs. natural....all have their problems.
As far as iodine, it seems that ODing on it during pregnancy is not recommended. But getting the right amount is important. DUH! I didn't even realize that I had uniodized salt in my cabinet. But I am getting iodine in my prenatals.
So any more info on this topic would also help me!

kelp is the "herb" that is usually recommended for increasing iodine.

But again, I have read over and over that kelp should not be taken during pregnancy 
I was taking before I read the side effects on pregnant women. Then again....you have to consider the dosage. But in order to deal with the thyroid, one must take a decent amount.
This thryoid problem is a mixed bag of a big mess!

There is always a problem with herbs of any kind that no matter what data there is, because they're not prescription some people will speak out against their use, especially in pregnancy. So when you look for information you also need to carefully consider the source. Just like you can't trust some doctors' opinions on midwifes because no matter what the data shows they think anything but an OB in a hospital is abuse or something. There are those that will do the same with herbs.
I haven't looked up kelp for pregnancy widely but one of my favorite alternative sources recommends it. Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Balch
But I definately am not recommending that you take it regardless of what you read.
Just pointing out that you need to find sources that you feel have a reasonably balanced approach and trust those rather than looking at many sources, a sort of poll where the most votes win, when many sources may simply be "covering their rear" by nay-saying use of anything "unproven" for pregnancy.
