Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Help!

Does anyone know of any good books or websites that contain information on healthy eating for kids. We eat "basically healthy." They get fruit & veggie servings (2-4 each) each day; however, what I consider "healthy," I think likely is not (ie, we consume a lot of dairy). I am wanting to learn more about eliminating dairy and maybe even meat (gasp!), as well as refined sugars--but need the motivation and the know-how to do this. Especially when I cannot even make a meal that everyone likes right now! Let alone when I nix the butter, cheese & sugar from things!!! They are likely to go on a food strike!

Also, how do you feed a large family healthy AND keep cost down???

I would appreciate any guidance in this area. Thank you, ladies!

Well, we tend to follow a pretty "traditional" diet believing--after a fair bit of reading and research--that this is healthy and what we have evolved to thrive on. So while we would be right there with you cutting out refined sugar we do eat quite a bit of full-fat dairy, including butter. We also eat meat but we try to use it as an ingredient: a rice and veggie dish with some chicken mixed in, for example. I think that most people need meat but not in the quantities seen in a typical American diet.

There are a lot of books and websites on this topic but I really like Nina Planck in particular. She has a very easy-to-read writing style and is very down to earth. I have her Real Food: What to Eat and Why. It is easy to use with lots of lists in it. She also just came out with Real Food for Mother and Baby which I haven't read but which focuses more on feeding children and eating during pregnancy.

As for keeping costs down . . . we definitely prioritize food over other discretionary items so we do spend a bit more. But don't assume everything will be more expensive if you eat this way. Raw milk here is cheaper than organic at the grocery store. Using better meat but using it more sparingly can keep the costs equal or lower. Cutting out refined sugar can keep sickness at bay. Cooking from scratch is both much healthier and much cheaper even if you aren't trying to use any special ingredients.

I second the recomendation for raw milk. If you get raw milk you can make your own butter too . Carlton Fredricks wrote alot about healthy eating for kids and disguising nutrition in tasty ways. He also recomends eating the more nutritious organ meats as opposed to the more bulky muscle tissue of an animal; actually pretty common among more healthy, indiginous type peoples.
God speed on your quest for better health!
