Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just posted our family's cold and flu plan here. Which has me wondering...

What does your family do to bring comfort and cheer while ill? I'm not looking for so much for remedies (which are shared on the other topic) but things like...

Watch movies.
Drop lavender oil on pillow cases to counter medicinal smells.
Give back rubs.
Open windows when possible and appropriate.
Cold wash clothes on forhead during fever.

Love,

I have just been searching the internet for a book like this. Something sort of like a Home Comforts version (much smaller of course) of looking after your family when they are ill along the lines you mention. With good foods to cook, good organisation/helpful tips on how to cope with the practicalities of taking care of a sick family, nice things for mum to do to show compassion, plus good prayers for when you are ill etc.

Our whole family was sick with gastro(rotavirus?)last week. All at the same time. Something which has never happened to us before. I started cleaning the house as fast as I could when I realised it was going to 'get' us all. I managed to get things in a good state before I got ill. But it would have been nice to have some meals in the freezer prepared, and various other preparations that got me thinking about how I could be better prepared next time. Some plastic sheet/pillow protectors would seem a good buy

I'm looking forward to seeing what others here have to say.

Sharyn, you jarred my memory --- no easy feat . Laurel's Kitchen Caring is a book I owned years ago, loaned out, and it wasn't returned. Ah ha...I think I'll go ahead and purchase it again and see if I still like it

Wow...you're right! There really should be a book as you describe above. Are you up to writing this book ?

Love,

Alas no, which is why I was looking for something But I'm going to keep researching along these lines and will compile something which I hope will be useful for my family in the future. Thanks for the book recomendation, this is along the lines of what I'm thinking. Surely there must be other good books, but I have come up with nothing from Amazon anyway.

One thing that really was nice during our illness last week was all the Fly Lady organisation that I've been putting into practise. We don't have anyone to call in situations like we had with our family illness. It was so nice to be able to relax and know that my house was clean. No dirty toilets or bathrooms. My sink was clear, the dishes done. Our bedroom was in order, no piles of stuff or mess, but arranged as attractively as I know how, and comforting because of it.

Make 3 or 4 meals to put in the freezer in case you get ill, or you are so busy looking after others that you don't have time to cook. Perhaps cook some meals especially for those who are ill and freeze them too. At the very least it will give you a head start should your whole family become ill.

Have a crucifix either hanging on the wall visible from the bed or on a bedside table.

Have a special warm cozy blanket reserved especially for times of illness.

A tray for serving meals in bed.
Put some special small items on the tray, flowers etc.
