The hum of the nebulizer has begun again in my house for my son, and we use it with Xopenex and Pulmicort. Every year I go through this question: Do you also give your child a cough medicine? Like Mucinex to make the coughs more productive, if the cough requires that? I notice the neb helps right away, but I am always second guessing myself in this area.

what are the medicines doing? keeping up fluids helps keep thing less thick for being able to more easily cough them up..   The big thing I think would be sure you weren't given two meds that do the same thing.. that's where you can run into overdosing.

Our pediatrician says NO cough medicine. The neb treatments will open the airways so the coughing can be productive. This is usually the way it is when we are on every 4 hour treatments, with albuterol and pulmicort. Sometimes prednisolone is added if it's really tight. Not looking forward to that time of year, and will pray for your son to clear quickly.

To answer your question, no we don't give any cough medicine but we do give a TON of liquids.

My daughter (now 10) has had asthma essentially since birth and we used a nebulizer from birth until age 6 (until she could really use an inhaler) and my dr. has always said NO to cough medicine.

Mucinex is not a "cough" medicine. It thins mucus membranes. So you can take it with neb treatments, if mucus is one of your child's issues.

We use a lot of menthol, and ecalyputus oil this time of year. A few drops in the bath, or on a rag in the bottom of the shower really seems to help our breathing. I have had asthma all my life and 3 of my kids have it.

We have 3 kids on nebulizers every year. We use Xopenex and Pulmicort and yet I still use Mucinex. I do give cough medicine at night. I also rub their chests with Vicks Vapor Cream. I really believe that children need to rest and spending the night on the nebulizer or coughing is going to make it harder for them to recuperate. So, we use cough medicine for at night.

Also, you can use some colloidal silver in the nebulizer and it acts as a natural antibiotic. We try everything we can. We recently found some bronchial syrup that's homeopathic that has worked great too. Chestal is another bronchial syrup that works great.

I also use Sambucol to strengthen their immune system and Vitamin D and herbal tussin tea.

We all had the flu for several weeks and it was miserable. It seems like bronchials are my children's weakness and it took them a while to get over their coughs.

Blessings to you during this season!
