I am newly on synthroid. I kind of backed into it because the pharmacy ran out of the natural hormone treatment. I have been on it for three weeks. At the start of that time I got what I believed to be the flu. Since then I have felt rotten. I have heaviness in my chest and aching legs. (I had a chest x-ray last week to check for pneumonia.)
My doctor wants to see me and said that she doesn't think it could be the synthroid. Honestly, I am thinking about just stopping the drug and seeing what happens. Anyone been on synthroid and stopped?
I don't have the time or the money to be running to the doctor. And I really didn't want to be on synthetic medication if I could help it. I am such a bad patient, I know.

Molly, I've been on synthroid for YEARS now(since grade 11), and I have never had any side effects like that. I know that others prefer the natural ways of treating low thyroid, but I've only had success with synthroid. I would never go off it cold turkey, as I know my metabolism would drop like crazy and I'd end up with hair falling out, really bad fatigue, and depression.
I know this because my dosage changes dramatically during and after pregnancy, and I end up increasing or decreasing my dosage to alleviate the symptoms of not having enough thyroid hormone in my blood.
There are some good websites and books that I have seen around the net, but I have never pursued the more natural way of treating thyroid problems... mostly because I don't want to go through a phase of figuring out a treatment plan and having to feel awful and tired and depressed (and have my fertility messed up). Have you considered seeing a naturopath?

I think I will look for a naturopath. The thing is that my thyroid level was just barely low. In fact, on the old scale I would have been normal. I wasn't really having any symptoms either. I just went in for a physical and they did bloodwork. I felt fine on the Armour, but apparently that is very hard to come by now.
I know Synthroid works for a lot of people. I don't mean to knock it.

I understand that the armour availability is only a temporary problem, that it should start showing back up again.. and there is another natural thyroid replacement.. but can't think of the name right now.

Synthroid made me sick, on the lowest dosage. I had waves of nausea and diarrhea, which would make one think that I was overmedicated, since those are symptoms of that.
However, once I saw an endocrinoligist who prescribes Armour, and started that medication, those yucky side effects disappeared. I am taking 30 mcg. daily, which I have been able to find recently, but my doctor is willing to prescribe me 60 mcg. and let me cut each pill in half. Sometimes 60 is easier to find. 15 mcg. has been impossible to find (that's what I started at), and when that was my dosage I cut the 30's in half.

My sis had the exact same symptoms whem she started synthroid I think it's better now but she started about a month ago. I hope you can find the armour soon. There is another natural one you can get in Canada.....Annie

ah ha.. I found it.. this is the other natural thyroid (like armour) that I've heard of.

Thanks Jodie, Lisa and Annie! I am going to see if my doctor can order me the other natural drug.
Annie, thanks for the information about your sister. It helps to hear that I am not crazy for thinking there is a connection between how I am feeling and the medication.
I was already uneasy about the medication. I need to find an alternative.

When I was on synthroid, I was still symptomatic but my bloodwork always came out good. Armour has T3 in it, but synthroid is only T4. The body is supposed to manufacture T3 from the T4 but some people's bodies don't manufacture it as well as others. Armour is the only stuff that works for me.

Molly, I second EVERYTHING Theresa-Lynn wrote about the synthroid. I could have written it myself. I've been on Synthroid for 5 years now and my dosage changes with pregnancies and postpartum. I would never go off of it without my Endocrinologist's help in fear of the hair loss, severe fatigue ( meaning sleeping ALL day and going to bed all night over and over) as well as the rapid weight gain. It took me a while to get my TSH levels back to where I felt good again. ( I was almost in a coma in the ER before we discovered I had thyroid issues.) The synthoid gives me what it can't make on its own. I know that if I even miss a day, I am absolutely exhausted the whole day. I literally cannot live without it. My TSH levels have been extreme.. all the way from (139 to 0.03 )
