Hi Ladies,
My ds5 has an eye infection. I want to avoid the ped if possible, since I think this is where he first became sick last week. Also, I'm without my build-in babysitter this week and I dread taking the whole gang to the doctors.
Do you know any home remedies for eye infections? Sadly, I don't have any breastmilk, but I was just reading about tea bags (brewing, cooling a little, using as a compress), and salt (diluting a little, soaking a cotton ball, using as a compress but with squeezing a little in eye first). Any experience with success with either of those? Any other ideas? I'm hoping for something I would already have at home since I don't want to take him out, if possible. I have some expired (5/08) antibiotic drops that had been prescribed for an eye infection and I just discovered them--do you think they'd still be effective?
TIA!

okay, this is just me....but i would hesitate using the expired drops. mainly because, if your child ever had an allergic reactions or complication (some of my kids are allergic to many and varied things) i would never want to be in the ER trying to explain why i used expired, non-prescribed-to-this-person medicine.
i hope you find something that works and that he feels better soon.

Dear Molly,
No expert here, but for very mild infections here (eye seems itchy), I wet a paper towel with almost hot water, put a washcloth over the top, and have the child hold it over the affected eye for ten minutes (paper towel side to eye), not moving it.
If the water is too hot, hang on for a few seconds - it cools down really fast.
Have child lay on sofa and watch tv or listen to music or a story. Do this at least three times a day, preferable more often. I read that the warmth kills the bacteria. It's always worked for us, for MINOR eye infections.
I hope your little boy feels more comfortable soon.

Molly, any chance a close friend could express just a half ounce of breastmilk for his eye? I've cured many an eye ailment with breastmilk...

Last time we had a bout of pink eye here I called our family practice doctor who is also a homeopath. He suggested plain saline drops 3-4 times/day. Worked like a charm.

If none of the home remedies work, you don't have to go to the pediatrician. I've been to our optometrist - not as much exposure to germs, but they can prescribe if you need it - and I think we were one of the last states that allowed optometrists to prescribe antibiotics for eyes.

Make sure you use sterilized water if you need to use a warm compress.

I've always had great luck with salt water especially when older kids in no way want breastmilk in thier eye . I'm allergic to the antibiotic drops so I can vouch for salt water.
Chamomile tea works wonders too for sure . rest warm chamomile tea bags on the eyes it feels so good .
if cleaning little eyes remember wipe from inside outward and I always have a pile of clean clothes so I can wash the used ones after each use .
