My friend's 19 year old daughter has been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). She and her daughter are very distraught about it. Anyone had any experience with this or information that you could share that might be helpful? I'm trying to learn as much as I can to be supportive.

I'm guessing infertility is the big issue here as the ladies I know with PCOS are otherwise fairly healthy, average ladies. It is always scary to be diagnosed with a life long disease, especially if it means she may never give birth, but bear in mind God is in control. I will keep her in my prayers.

I was diagnosed with PCOS, as was a friend of mine. We are "normal" healthy women who have both successfully (dare I say, easily?) conceived multiple children. My cycles are never "normal" nor are hers--my cycles are long, hers are short. I really believe that PCOS is not well understood and is often given as a diagnosis when there is no other explanation. Even with the "chain of pearls" ovaries one can exhibit very few of the symptoms described as primary (obesity, masculinity).

There is hope! It is a frightening diagnosis, especially at that age (I was 20 and newly married when diagnosed). It has not been, however, as scary as I feared. NFP is more challenging (CCL provides more info than the Creighton model and we find it less stressful), I have to constantly deal with unpredictability in my cycles which is frustrating, but I am fairly asymptomatic otherwise. And I have the textbook PCOS ovaries!

I have it too and I'm pregnant with my 5th. (I had 2 miscarriages between #3 and #4.)

There's such a wide range of symptoms and experiences with it.

For most PCOS people something like the Zone Diet or Sugar Solution is helpful. Regular exercise or strength training is also very good. Many PCOS women have some form of insulin resistance (or predisposition to it) so strength training helps a lot. Body for Life is great for most PCOS women.

I have PCOS and we have struggled with infertility. It took us 4 years and several rounds of Serophene to conceive our oldest- we were not willing to pursue other forms of treatment beyond Serophene. After that, however, I had no problem getting pregnant with DS2 and needed no medical intervention. We have not yet conceived #3 though, so we're currently discussing a timeline for when to pursue treatment.

My mother has PCOS with all the classic symptoms (she is now borderline diabetic) and she was able to have 9 children through fertility drugs (including two sets of higher order multiples).
