I just got back from the hospital with my dd8, and turns out she's got mono. Doc said it was a virus, contagious, and will have to run its course. Just wondering if anyone else has had experience with mono, what natural remedies will help the inflamed glands, and make the mono run its course quicker? What can I do to protect my other children, dh and myself from getting it? (I am 30 weeks pregnant.)

I did some research last night, and found that many things will help mono. I'll list them here and if anyone has more to add, please do so. I have a question at the end for those familiar with giving dosages.

-Lots of rest. (Mono can lead to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)

-throat coat tea

-salt water gargle

-2 T. apple cider vinegar, 2 T. lemon juice, 1-2 T. honey and enough hot water to fill a mug is supposed to be soothing and aid in healing.

-warm compresss on lymph nodes

-slippery elm tea/lozenges

-rinse with tsp. baking soda in lukewarm water, follow by salt rinse every 2 hours

-lots of water

-garlic

-chlorophyll (for the liver) (mono affects the liver and the spleen)

-milk thistle (for the liver)

-young dandelion greens; dandelion capsules (for the liver)

-oregano oil (antibiotic and anti-viral)

-elderberry extract (immune and antiviral properties)

-green tea

-glutamine and L-lysine (amino acids) for the L-Lysine if person is over 12 years give 2000mg, if less than 12 years give 1000 mg.

-acidophilus (probiotic)

and the 2 things that seem to be very effective from the testimonials I read:

Lots and lots of Vitamin C. (when afflicted with mono, body can absorb 10 or more times than normal) I even read you can try to get your body up to 35,000 mg/day; but I don't know for how long.

-ascorbic acid powder: Take 7000mg in orange juice every hour (1st day), subsequent days: 1000 mg every hour "until bowel tolerance sydrome" (if anyone can explain that to me, I would appreciate it...)
Then, an amount every 3 hours just short of bowel tolerance syndrome. (I don't know what "an amount" was supposed to mean, or "just short of bts"...I'll look it up and edit to add or post new reply when I can.)

The second remedy that really worked was coconut oil. Adults can take 4 T./day. Gel caps can be taken 4 in morning and 4 in evening. (Coconut oil is also good for sinus infections, ulcers, candida utiles, herpes, etc.)

So, what I got today was:

a liver detox tincture containing: oregon grape root, fresh dandelion root, milk thistle seed, fresh red root, yellow dock root, fresh burdock root. It says to take 30 drops at a serving.

Virgin Coconut oil caps, 1000mg per capsule.

L-lysine 500mg per cap.

Nutri-C Complex containing (per tbsp): 500mg Vit. C,
100 mg quercetin, 50 mg rose hips, 50 mg citrus bioflavonoids, 50 mg billbery fruit powder.

My question is for those who know how to give proper dosages.

How much of each should I give and how many times per day? I will also be giving the apple cider vinegar and lemon juice drink. I have some oregano oil on hand as well as some green tea, and I hope to fit in garlic somewhere as well.

So far I'm thinking: 15 drops of the liver detox 3x per day, 1-2 lysine caps 3x per day, 2-3 coconut oil caps 2x per day, 1-2 Tbsp of Nutri-C Complex every hour or two. (Perhaps alternating Vitamin C pills and the liquid.) I'm thinking I may have to up the dosages of that drastically, though.
Fluids as needed.
I'm not sure how much oregano oil to give, or when.
Does anyone know if any of these should NOT be taken together?

Okay, I found info on bowel tolerance syndrome:

One way to estimate your current vitamin C needs is based on bowel tolerance. The method for determining this is outlined below:

• Begin by taking ½ teaspoon (1000 mg) of powdered vitamin C per day, or one 1000 mg vitamin C capsule.
• Each subsequent day, increase your vitamin C dosage by ½ teaspoon or one capsule (1000 mg).
• Be sure to spread your doses of vitamin C throughout the day.
• Continue increasing your vitamin C dose by ½ teaspoon or one capsule until you experience loose stools. At this point, you have reached your tolerance of vitamin C and have taken too much.
• Decrease your dosage of vitamin C by ½ teaspoon or one capsule. If loose stools do not reoccur, this is your maximal dosage of vitamin C.
• If loose stools continue, decrease your dosage of vitamin C until they stop.

Please keep in mind that if you take vitamin C to tolerance when you are sick, your need for it may decrease as you recover. You will then experience bowel tolerance at a much lower dose. You will need to slowly lower your dosage until you find your new maximum dosage of vitamin C.

I've been using elderberry extract in the presence of a virus and I find that instead of taking 2 teaspoons a day, morning and night, it is much more effective to take 1/2 tsp 4 times a day or even 1/4 tsp every two hours.

Viruses replicate every few hours so hence the value in smaller doses more frequently.

We just got through a three month long battle with mono. Luckily, only my dh and myself had it that bad, the kids only had it a week at a time, though my oldest was tired for some time after.

First of all, REST. Seriously, Rest Rest Rest. Set up a bed in the main part of the house if you need to.

We took one packet (2 for adults) of emergen c three times a day, a teaspoon (tbsp for adults) of elderflower tincture 3 times a day, and the adults took 1 tbsp of St. John's Wort tincture 2 times a day. I don't know about safety of all that while pregnant but see my next paragraph. St. John's Wort does cause photosensitivity so be mindful of that.

It is contagious, but through saliva, no kissing on the mouth, no sharing food or drinks, no sharing toothbrushes (ha ha!), and maybe even watch things like pillows or bedding to be absolutely sure. My sister had it at age 10 and nobody else in the family got it. It is easier to get as a child than as an adult and offers lifelong immunity. As I said, I never got it from my sister and didn't get it until recently. I still am not as energetic as I used to be (but there is a thyroid issue at play for me, too). Chances are, you won't get it.

Good luck and keep us posted! I'll definitely "hold you in the light" (Quaker way of saying pray for you, I love the idea of God's light surrounding someone.) and your daughter, too. I hope it passes soon. Chances are it will.

I'm sorry to hear about your family's battle with mono. Not a pleasant disease, that's for sure.
I'm happy to say that my dd is feeling much better, and has felt much better after 3 days of the treatment I've been giving her:

L-Lysine: 1 cap 3x/day

Coconut oil caps: 2 caps 3x/day for 2 days, upped to 3caps 3x/day

Liquid Vit. C into which I put 5 drops oregano oil and 15 drops liver detox tincture

She still has a runny nose, a cough, and is somewhat stuffy. So, she's not 100% better, but at least is not bed/couch-ridden. I'm just not sure how long to keep up the treatment. Any advice? Should I lessen the dosages now that she's better, should I stop altogether except for maybe the Vit. C and L-Lysine? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Just went to the doc for a check up today for dd, and the mono is still there, not as bad in the lymph glands, but her spleen has enlarged. No rough activities, and she needs to go for an ultrasound. I had no idea the importance of a spleen! My goodness. Very serious stuff if it gets punctured. They have to remove it, then if person gets a fever/flu they have to be hooked up an IV with antibiotics. I think that's what she said. Don't want that to happen!

Got ds6 tested b/c he was quite sick last night, coughing and just blah. That's how I was too, only it's carried on all through today. We got his blood work done, doc called me back not too long ago to say ds's test is positive. For me, she said to just assume that I have it. For both of us, the symptoms are like that of colds/coughs. Blech.

Would anyone know if I should keep my dd on the previously mentioned pills and tinctures? Should I add any liver detox for my son's treatment? She said just treat it like a cold. So, lots of Vit. C and garlic.

Anyone know how to make an elderberry extract? Or does that have to be done with certain equipment? What else can I add for myself (pregnant) and my son, that will help us get over it? Thanks for any advice!

We used a tincture rather than an extract. To make a tincture you just take the plant material (fresh is preferred) and put it in a clean jar. Cover with vodka or as high proof alcohol as possible. After six weeks it is done and you can strain the plant material out or not. I'd keep up with whatever regimen your children are on for sure.

I also drank a lot of dandilion root "coffee" during that time as I was craving it. I wonder if there is a connection as it is good for your liver. I've read that dandilion root isn't for pregnancy, though. (I drank it during pregnancy, but I'm a rebel like that. I eat sushi while pregnant, too.)

Just rest. Is there anyone who can bring over meals and stuff? Ask around, surely someone from church can get a group going. If not then see if someone can help you put together a few freezer meals.

Put a bed or mattress in the main part of your house and keep on it as much as possible. Same for your kids. Eat ice cream and cold things. Watch some sweet cheesy movies, play card games, color in coloring books.

I'm so sorry this is happening to your family. It was horrible when we went through it. Just awful, and I wasn't pregnant.

If your dh isn't ill, maybe he can make a stack of peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches for y'all to munch on throughout the day. Yogurt and smoothies are good, too. Also soup. ahh soup was a good thing when we were that sick.

How is your daughter?

I have a 19 year old son who was diagnosed on Friday with strep throat and mono. He is in pretty bad shape - and I'm 5 hours away. What would you recommend to work best (if I can actually get him to take it!)

My daughter is doing very well. She got over it pretty quick. However, it wants to keep hanging on to me, with a stuffy/runny nose. Hopefully it'll finish up this week, as I believe it's been 6 weeks now. Doc said children can often get over it in about 2 weeks, adults about 6 weeks.
So sorry to hear your son was diagnosed with both! Ouch!!
I would recommend virgin coconut oil capsules (1000mg each): 4 in the morning and 4 at night. There have been lots of testimonials favouring coconut oil, and seeing speedy results.

LOTS of Vit. C - somewhere I read 35,000 mg, but I think that's overboard. I'm not qualified to recommend a proper amount, but, maybe 2000-4000mg 3x per day? I do believe you can nevertheless take monstrous amounts of the stuff.

A form of liver detox. Perhaps a tincture. Milk thistle is good too. Or dandelion leaves. You really want them to take it easy and watch out for their liver and spleen. Mono can enlarge both organs, and if the spleen gets ruptured and not noticed, the person can internally bleed to death. If it is caught in time and surgically removed, every time the person gets a flu, they have to be on an IV with antibiotics.

I also gave Lysine (an amino acid that helps boost the immune system) 2 caps/3x per day.
And, I'd recommend echinacea tincture/tea (caps?) and garlic.

For the throat, a salt water gargle, or throat coat tea. My dd did not like the apple cider/lemon juice/honey mixture,mentioned in my second post, but you can still try it and see if that helps if you (he) want(s). Or rinse with tsp. baking soda in lukewarm water, follow with a salt rinse every 2 hours. (I think I actually brushed my tongue and the back of the mouth area with b. soda on my toothbrush, and it gave some relief as well.)

I hope he gets better soon and will keep you in my prayers! eta:('You' is plural. )

I'm so glad that your daughter is well - and I hope you're on the mend soon!

Thank you for the helpful information - I'm going to encourage my son to take heed of these recommendations. He won't be home for another week and a half, but then I can really work on him for a couple of weeks before he returns to school. Right now, I'm a bit worried about him catching the flu that is still going around - this would not be a good time for that!

Reviving this thread after searching for "mono"

I have felt so fatigued lately and a gland in my throat has hurt on and off for months. I feel like I can never get enough sleep.

I finally went to my dr. on Monday. He ordered up some blood tests. A nurse just called with the results and said something about my IgG level, mono, and chronic fatigue syndrome. I am not sure if this means I have "walking mono" or CFS or both. I will see him again on Friday for the baby's well visit and hope to get some clarification on this.

I suppose I can check my cabinets for vitamin C and elderberry until I can get to the store for some other remedies. Today we are snowed in (and baking pies ) and tomorrow is Thanksgiving.

I think I feel even more tired knowing what I have
