I just heard this from a Mom on the Sonlight forum.
She had just heard on the radio that "There have been 6 confirmed cases of measles in the No-Virginia & DC area."
I just thought I would give the heads-up, I know we have a lot of Moms here on the board in that area.
:(

OK - I am just a little concerned. I just got back from well visits for the littles - and I do not do the MMR vaccine- my doctor said it was Maryland that had the cases.

The last one was in NoVa. The guy worked at Harris Teeter in Falls Church, Shopped at Safeway on Old Bridge Rd, went to the 711 on Old Bridge Rd, the CVS on Silverbrook in Fairfax, the IHOP in Falls Church (I think) and a bar in NW DC.
They said Measles is *highly* contagious and that it can be transmitted via air for up to 2 hours after a contagious person has been somewhere. Most people with measles end up being fine, but up to 20% experience significant complications--and most of those are little people. (Got all this between the Post this am and Fox5 last night.)

Laura, our family and local area has been abuzz with this. The other ones were in MD, but now our county just had a confirmed case, unfortunately.

We all had measles in my family when I was growing up. Not sure I need to look about, but what is the big scare? I thought it was sort of like chicken pox? Very rarely are there problems.

Measles is a much more serious illness than chicken pox. We all had it as kids, too; it was just one of those things you had to get through. My BIL who was born in 1961 is the first person I'd ever heard of being immunized against it. Most people get over measles without major problems, although they are plenty sick while they have it. There are some very serious possible complications, though, such as encephalitis, which can have lasting effects. One little girl in my neighborhood growing up suffered brain damage from this and was institutionalized because her parents couldn't take care of her at home. Very sad. Not to be alarmist,but this is one "childhood illness" that you are way better off not getting. But what I wonder is this: if everyone else (or pretty nearly so) is immunized, aren't they safe? Or are there some families that don't do the measles vaccine? From what I'd heard about recent cases, the people who got measles came from other countries where immunization isn't common. Or am I not getting the full story? Just wondering...

Nancy, most immunizations are at best 60% effective. Many children have brain damage and worst death from these immunizations. I know in my state there is, on public record over 2000 deaths and brain damaged cases reported EACH year from these vaccines. Example: 12 years ago there was no polio in the west hemisphere, EXCEPT from live vaccines. So, it is hard to tell the truth. I will certainly pray all in the NoVa area are safe from this childhood disease. YIKES scary stuff.

60%? Can I just ask where that stat came from? Just curious.
My DH has had the measles vax numerous times, and yet no antibodies. So, I know it happens. I am just really curious about the 60% effectiveness, and which vaccines you are talking about.

The instruction sheets in the packaging of vaccines, printed by the pharmaceutical companies. Also the Dept of Health and Human Services.
Yes, Laura I read your first post you deleted. That sounds weird, poor guy. We are all created so complexly and yet beautifully. Only a true Artist can figure us all out

You sound very condescending in this line of your post. I hope I am reading it wrong.
I had nothing to 'hide' - that is not why I deleted. I did so because I know that this is a heated topic, with caring and loving and informed parents on both sides of the issue, all doing what they see as best for their children.
I asked because 60%, across the board, for all vaccines, sounds like a scare tactic used by anti-vax propaganda.
Since you didn't really provide links, or say which vaccines you were talking about, I asked.
And for your information, we personally use a delayed and selective schedule, so it is not like I am particularly pro-vax anyway.
But I still find it hard to believe that ALL vaxes, according to their inserts and H&HS, have a 60% effectiveness - which is what you are claiming. I guess I will go check all that out further.

Ladies - this line of questioning and debate regarding the use of vaccines needs to stop right here. This is a prudential decision prayerfully considered between spouses.
Laura began this thread as a way of offering a heads-up and prayers for those in the NoVa community who may be facing a Measles outbreak in the area. Let's keep the thread on topic by offering prayers and any helpful tips/thoughts on the spreading of Measles. This has an impact on many - from those who are unvaccinated, those who are vaccinated but do not develop immunity/antibodies, and those at particular risk - infants, pregnant women, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised.

And for what it's worth, it looks like a second case has been reported in NOVA:
The Virginia Department of Health added Potomac Mills Mall to its measles exposure list Thursday. According to a press release issued Thursday, the Against All Odds store and the entrance closest to the store in Neighborhood 3 at Potomac Mills are now considered exposure sites.

Ok, I just went and checked with the CDC website.. measles is a VIRUS.
There are natural remedies you can take that can help fight off a virus and/or reduce it's severity.
ANTIVIRALS
Elderberry
Ginger (care should be taken if pregnant or on other meds)
Grapefruit Seed Extract (care should be taken if on other meds)
Colloidal silver
Garlic
IMMUNE BOOSTERS
Echinacea
vit. C
chicken soup
If you have any suggestions to add to this, post them and I'll add them into this list so that we have them compiled.

Thanks Laura, I couldn't remember if it was anti-viral in addition to the anti-bacterial. And garlic bread is so yummy with real garlic on it
