I am an aunt again! My little sister just had a c-section for the third time bringing little Sarah Anne into the world. The dr said she had a lot of scarring and told her not to get pregnant again. Is there anything she can do about this?

TIA!

God love you,

Ummm....I would wonder about the doc's perspective. Three C-sections seems to be when many mainstream docs would start pushing you to stop having babies. I wonder if he's truly concerned about the level of scarring, or if that is his standard advice? I think if the delivery was fairly easy and she has a rapid recovery, that is probably a good sign that she should consult someone who may look at things differently.
I see a pro-life Catholic ob and am on my sixth pregnancy and C-section. All of them have included extra risk factors, and yet he is adamant about preserving my chances of doing this as many times as possible. I'm sure I can't be any less scarred than your sis.

On the other hand, scarring and adhesions can be very serious, very risky business, as I found out the hard way during C-Section #2. I agree she should seek a second opinion from a pro-life doctor, but I would be interested to know exactly what the operating doctor saw in there, because the wrong kind of scarring can lead to enormous, lifelong debilitating problems even without pregnancy down the road, and possibly death of baby or mom in a future pregnancy. Not trying to be a doomsayer -- just saying not all docs are "just using it as an excuse to force you to stop having kids" (which I've heard from countless well-meaning Catholic women when the topic comes up). There's healthy, normal scarring, and then there's the other kind.

Donna Marie, defiantly try to have her seek other opinions. The One more soul site, may be able to help with referrals.

My doctor has the same viewpoint as Colleen's. I'll be having my seventh c-section in about six weeks and he, too, is always thinking ahead to the next baby when he delivers each one. He always inspects the scar tissue from previous babies and removes it, if possible.

There are absolutely risks with scar tissue with repeat c/s, so it shouldn't be blown off. There's a greater risk for acreta, which can be very dangerous, as well as other issues. BUT, when you have a doctor you can trust, who shares or at least understands your beliefs, you'll be more at ease with the advice he/she gives. My doc has delivered four of my six so far, and if he ever told me it would be very dangerous to become pregnant again, I would take his advice seriously. I certainly wouldn't put it ahead of my faith, but at least I'd know he was telling me out of a genuine concern for me (personally and medically) and not because he just wanted me to stop having babies. I hope that makes sense!

I'd suggest your sister seek a second opinion and keep looking for a great doctor in her area. She wouldn't happen to live in Northern Virginia?

Nope...she lives just south of State College in PA....

I did talk to her today and she is open to learning more about her condition. She and the baby are doing very well right now, thanks be to God. I don't want her to put limits on herself based on what one dr says who isn't even close to being on the same page with her in these things.

Thank you all soo much!!

Well, I have had all my eight children by C-section. I had tons of scarring the first time due to my stitches being torn out after the surgery because of severe coughing. It was really difficult for the doctor to deliver my subsequent children, but I did have 8 altogether. Finally, with the last one, my super pro-life, big-family-friendly, Catholic
OB/Gyn told me that if I had another child, he could not be sure he would be able to deliver it, so we have been very careful since then (although now I'm really getting too old for it to be an issue!). So maybe a second opinion from a doctor who supports large families and slightly risky pregnancies would be an option.

If she's willing/able to travel a bit Dr. Faith Daggs in Camp Hill, PA specializes in high risk obstetrics AND is a faithful Catholic.

I had 8 C sections, and my doctor visually inspected each time he went in there. I was very blessed to have a Catholic pro life doctor. He told me that as long as the scar did not get too thin(windows he called them), I was good to go for another baby.

How do you get a second opinion? Don't they have to see your uterus to give the second opinion?

The reason I ask, I have two friends, one has had 4 c-sections and the other has had 3. Each has a different doctor and each had been told their uterus was "paper thin" and more pregnancies were not recommended. Their doctors are just mainstream ob's. Both of my friends are concerned by the doctors words, but one of them questions what a pro-life dr would have said. She wonders how to get a second opinion?

Hi,

I just had my 4th Csection 8 weeks ago. When I had the third Csection ( I have one vertical and 3 horizontal incisions); the anesteiologist said that he was shocked at how little scar tissue that I had. At our hospital there are about 7 practices of OB's but only a few anestiologists. He said that for a woman with both types of incisions as I have that I must have had exceptional surgeons because there should be more scar tissue. With this Csection, it was the Nurse who commented that there was very little scar tissue and she really anticipated a lot more. So my Jewish doctor who had to do this one instead of my normal Catholic doctor said that everything was OK for one more.

In short, I don't know that anyone outside of your sisters' surgeons could really comment on the state of her uterus. Yes, the surgeon could be over protective but he could also be stating some truth.

I always make it a point to listen for comments during the surgery-comments about how boggy the uterus is, how much blood was lost and what the nurses or surrounding doctors say in regards to sewing up speed, scar tissue, etc. I really don't pay so much attention to the baby until after I am sewed up and I can process everything that the team is saying around me....I had a doctor lie to me with the first Csection ( he said that I could do a VBAC in the future when he knew that he had cut me vertically and there was no way that a VBAC could happen again.) So now I am acutely aware of everything that goes on around me in that room, so that I can be completely aware of the potential risks of having more children. Aware of the real risks and not the exaggerated ones that doctors sometimess give out.

I feel completely comfortable with another pregnancy in a year because I heard that my uterus was not boggy that I had no blood loss, that there was no scar tissue and that it only took about 20 minutes to sew me back up which is about the same as in all the previous Csections.
