Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hey ladies,
My baby (4wks tomorrow) has caught the cold we have been passing around for the past 2wks I am so sad and upset for him
He has a occasional runny nose, and he can breath to nurse. It's when he wakes up you can hear the congestion and he then coughs and gags. I'm using saline drops when he wakes before we nurse... anything else? Is there anything I should keep my eye on? This is only day 2 and I just want him to heal up quick.

Thanks
Al

Watch to be sure his nostrils don't flare. Then, everyone once in awhile watch his ribcage as he breathes. You don't want to see retraction--when the skin under his ribcage looks like it's being sucked under. Also, listen for wheezing. In any of those cases, don't wait to take him in. He's tiny and what looks like a cold in bigger people can be RSV, which is much harder for a little one. They can quickly swab his nose to see what virus he has.

You can take megadoses of Vit. C yourself to help boost yours (and his immune system).

A humidifier might help as well as a steamy bathroom. I have had good luck with camphor oil in steamy water to help clear congestion. We put it in a fondue pot, but just water from the stove would work. I haven't done it with a little one, but the oil is pretty strong; so, you wouldn't have to put their face in the steam (like I would for myself).

Befire bed I would have give him a warm bath with California Baby Cold Bath or Johnson and Johnson Cold Bath and massage his chest and feet with Badger Balm for colds or Vicks baby. Also if you can raise his head up slightly when he is asleep.

Just keep nursing as much as you can. As Elizabeth said - watch for the retractions and wheezing - and also for any sign of struggling to breathe.

I will pray for you - I know how scary it is with newborn colds.

Thanks for the heads up; I remembered the retractions, but forgot about the nostril flare. The thought of RSV scares the daylights out of me. We had to do a RSV risk asesment when we went in for his 1wk check up, i guess thats standard now.

I was wondering if it would be ok to take more vit.C and B while still taking my prenatal vits, don't want to o.d.

I actually have some Vic's Baby- I'll give that a try tonight.

With each new child my fear for their safety has increased. You just understand how precious this gift is.

Thank you so much for the prayers!

You can take Vit. C to bowel tolerance, so, if you feel your stools are getting loose, back of, but you can't really over dose.

I take Emergen-C which also has trace B Vitamins. I think if you take it in that form, with the proportions there, you will reach bowel tolerance long before you would overdose on the B, but I'm not a doctor, so that's just what I have done. I'm guessing that most of us are more likely to be deficient in B vitamins rather than overdose.

The camphor oil kind of has the same effect as Vick's or some other "cold" vapors.

While I haven't tried it with a newborn, I have discovered that Vicks rub on the feet with warm socks over them really helps with night congestion.

Thank you all for the help. It was kind of a wild ride. He got very congested so I took him into the dr.'s so she could at least know what's going on if things went south over the weekend (why do kids end up needing an ER visit on weekends or holidays???).

It wasn't in his chest, he had a little fluid in his ears, and a lot of congestion. She told me what to look for and gave me her pager number very sweet of her.

On Sunday he started spitting up/vomiting after every nursing session- oh and how he cried I cried too! I did call the doc. and she agreed with my mommy intuition that it was his way of getting out the mucus.

So, I am happy to report that today was much better and with the exception of some congestion and coughing he was normal. I am praying that he will just continue to heal these next few days and we will lay low.

Thanks again!
Alison

Alison,

My one month old has been having the exact same issue! Friday I brought him into the pediatrician to be on the safe side and he confirmed that while there was no sign of RSV, he had a bit of a cold and thrush which was making the mucus issue worse. So we've got gagging and spitting at times and I just hope it ends soon! Your post gives me hope.
