...when it didn't before.

Codfish and salmon both caused my son to get hives recently. The codfish was a new addition but the salmon was not. He eats a lot of it (the salmon). He's 6. Any information would be helpful. TIA.

Both forms were frozen fillets, not breaded. The bags you get in the frozen section at Sams.

My fish allergy developed around that age. I was eating tuna and canned salmon with no problems. I would get hives sometimes, coughing sometime. Now I go into anaphylaxis with just the anchovies that are found in worchestershire sauce in BBQ sauce - small amounts .

If you can, you might want to consider having your child tested for a fish food allergy. Fish is one of the most severe and life long, so you would want to be prepared.

Dawn,

Perhaps the fish comes into contact with other seafood or shellfish products that he may be allergic to during packaging etc. OR he is actually allergic to fish. My son is allergic to seafood, although he seems to mainly be allergic to shellfish. He exhibits symptoms such as feeling ill, profuse drooling, vomiting, feet may swell a little and he may itch. We have found that he can often become ill if he plays with small shells on the beach, or perhaps it is something in the water at the ocean??? (bacteria??) Also, my Mom often brings bags of cooked crabs to us in the summer since they have crab pots, and we can no longer do that since he would become ill just being in the room with the crabs, or sitting at the table where crabs had been!! Weird, huh? We haven't had him tested, but the pediatrition said to stay away from shellfish, obviously. Also, I think it was iodine or something they use to clean wounds in hospitals contains something to do with a seafood allergy, so always make sure to tell medical staff etc. (Whatever that orange colored stuff they clean you off with prior to surgery. Perhaps someone knows what I mean?)

My son started having reactions to seafood/shellfish when he was around 10. He also had a short problem with green apples when he was younger, had the same weird reaction, but that seems to have passed. He also had his ears swell up VERY large once after eating mango as a child and his feet swelled (mainly his toes) one summer when he ate a whole lot of strawberries from his grandma's strawberry patch. (Also, he seemed to have a stronger allergic reaction to the green apples that grow on their trees. They do not use pesticides, so we wondered if it was something in the soil or just a coincidence??? )

Good luck! It never hurts to get tested and find out more about it. You should be aware though that many things have to be avoided that may have come in contact with seafood. I remember being in the drive-thru at a KFC one night and read a notice that their products may come into contact with seafood that is also served in the store, so it was a warning to people with seafood/shellfish allergies. Also, he may have trouble at the beach. The best thing is to just be aware, and to make a note of any strange reactions he may have and not discount them etc. If he feels nauseus or itchy or gets hives after being in ocean water, or playing with seashells etc. then he may have to be cautious. My son, now 14, doesn't seem to have this reaction at the seashore anymore, although he does sort of avoid handeling shells etc. in general, but he came swim without incident now.         &n bsp;

Kim mentioned the iodine/betadine that her doctor told her to avoid. My allergist does not believe that a person can be allergic to iodine, well he didn't until he met me. I am very allergic to it.

Fish and seafood are often lumped into one allergy due to the possibility/probability of cross contamination. Be cautious and prepared for a possible reaction. Always have benedryl handy if you child will be near fish. They come in handy 1 tsp dosing spoons now, easy to toss in a purse.

Again, since he had hives, that is an IgE reaction (vomitting and such can be Ige or not). IgE reactions can get worse with exposure.

Thank you ladies. (Although I don't know what IgE means.    ). I was wondering about cross-contamination myself. I think I"ll call the manufacturers of the product I have. He ate salmon last week at chilis w/o incident and catfish last week also. The sticky part is that we don't give him Benadryl b/c it is contraindicative (or some word like that!!) for his epilepsy. In fact, it did trigger seizures for him a couple of years ago and we haven't used it since. Also, he's on a low-carb diet (to control his seizures) and salmon is one of the few no carb proteins he eats reliably. It would really s-u-c-k for it to be removed from his diet.

My daughter is severely allergic to fish and shellfish - we found out at 5 or 6. She used to eat tuna when younger with no problems. Codfish is one of the worst. Salmon was not a problem at first but she is very very allergic now. We have to avoid all Chinese, Thai food, be careful of anything that has anchovies (Worcestershire sauce etc)or fish sauce. Benadryl has saved her life several times. Another thing to watch out for is calcium supplements made out of fish, kiddie vitamins with fish oil - and check or any healthy treats which use fish gelatin
