DD has a cough that is only at night when she lays down to go to sleep. She says it's just a tickle in her throat that she has to cough, but it keeps her awake (and everyone else in her room!). It's just shown up since it is getting cold out. No fever or other trouble, just the cough and just at night. Any suggestions?

Thanks and God bless,
Christine

getting cold out? does that also mean heat going on in the house? could the house be too dry? or could there be something that is causing a bit of an allery that's bothering her with the house closed up?

Yep, it does.

You know, I'm going to try the humidifier in her room tonight. I wonder if that has something to do with it. I remember using it last year now that you mention it.

It could also be the allergy thing with the house closed up, too. I think I'll try the humidifier first to rule it out, then start investigating allergies. Perhaps we need to dust???

Thanks and God bless,
Christine

It might actually be post nasal drip, even if she doesn't think she is congested in her head. I had this for about a month last year before I finally went to the doctor and she put me on a strong antihistamine/decongestant. So, you might want to target it like a head cold.

For nighttime relief, I would drink tea with lots of honey and suck on lozenges. Prayers for a quick recovery. I just hate that feeling when you know when you lie down you will start coughing!

I have found that alavert for children and rubbing some Vicks VapoCream (the one in the white tube that's not so greasy) on their chests does the trick for us.

That tickle cough is usually from post nasal drip. Our allergies have really been acting up lately.

Hope this helps.

Ugh. This is exactly what's happening with my dd right now. We gave her some cough medicine tonight and are turning the thermostat *way* down (brrrrr!), so I'll check back in and let you know if it helps any.

Wishing her (and all of you) sleep tonight!

I've not needed to try it yet, but the ladies in my neighborhood swear by rubbing Vicks on the feet and having said person sleep with socks on after application.

If you try it, let us know if it works or not.

Turning down the thermostat considerably seemed to help.

The humidifier did help, but then again, the weather got better (warmer), so I don't know if that truly was the cause. It's getting colder again, and the heat will be kicking on sometime soon. We'll see if the tickle cough comes back...

Sarah, when you said about turning down the thermostat, we have it set at 65 degrees. What temperature are you talking about? I don't know if dh will agree to any lower.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I suppose I'll keep trying them one by one until we figure it out.

God bless,
Christine

If she's over a year old give her a teaspoon of honey at bedtime. It's an old remedy that has recently been shown to be very effective. Works like a charm.
