I had an appt. w/ my doctor on Monday...he measured my uterus at 25cm. I'm 17 weeks pregnant. And yes, I'm VERY SURE of my dates. When I was 13 weeks along, I measured 17cm. So, my uterus has grown 8cm in a month???

I've measured 2-3cm big with my other babies, but I've never grown this much in a month before! The doctor doesn't seem concerned and is chalking it up to my uterus being stretched out from 4 previous pregnancies. He did a sonogram at 9weeks to check on the baby...and he just saw one lil' baby...so he says it's not twins. Could he have missed one? I'm kind of worried that something could be wrong...I'm having an ultrasound on Monday, but I'm feeling pretty anxious in the meantime.

For those of you who are moms of many...do you find that your uterus grows faster the more babies you have?

Thanks...
Dawn

did the same person measure you both times?

I have measured a bit big at the start with all of mine but by 20 weeks or so I'm measuring pretty much right on. then near the end I measure both up and down just depends on baby's position.

Dawn I always measure up bigger and usually the big 'growth spurt' of the fundus is about the early 20 week mark...I remember with my biggest baby (11 pounds) I was measuring up 46cm at the 40 week mark.

Fibroids can cause this too I understand..has the doctor mentioned this at all?

Jodie, yes, the same person measured me both times.

Anne, the doctor hasn't mentioned fibroids...would those have shown up on the early sonogram the doctor did?

I also had a very thourough sonogram done when I miscarried last February. Surely fibroids would have been seen on that sonogram?

Also, wouldn't there be other symptoms, like very painful periods, with fibroids?

The only explanation my doctor could give me was that I've carried 4 babies to term and that my uterus was stretched out. I was wondering, though, if that could account for such dramatic growth?

I suppose he could have made a mistake when measuring me. ???

Dawn

Well he may have...you know, I am a mystery to my doctors..my last doctor with Annuncia said when palpating me in the last weeks...you could have twins there...or fibroids...but I don't think that could be the case, I don't have symptoms, my uterus shrinks down incredibly fast..yet I have this unexplained 'big-ness' in pregnancy..

They mentioned fibroids to me when pregnant with my first baby and I had my one and only scan since they said it had to be checked out, but there was no fibroid, so it started from the very first baby for me.

Can placenta placement make a difference? Mine is always up high at the top of my uterus or there abouts.

I think my uterus must be a bit like bungy jumping material!

Dawnie, since my 3rd I've always measured really large for dates - like 8-10 cms larger! :) This one is on different, I even 'grew' 5 cms in 2 weeks. Ultrasound looked very normal with a slightly larger than dates baby.

Dawn, I have always measured big. My mother told me it was my good German upbringing. I remember friends commenting on it when I was pregnant, and with my last one, I looked like I swallowed three basketballs (and I have the pictures to prove it).

Carol, a very interesting comment about your mother's saying, "your good German upbringing.." Well my dh has nearly all German heritage...so I'm carrying these little babies with alot of German ancestory in them! Maybe it's his fault?

I measured big this last time. They said it was a lot of amniotic fluid which apparently is something that can increase with # of babies too.

And the question about the same person measuring you is a good one. With my first child, the doctor (not even the nurse) weighed me and said I had gained 9 lbs in 2 weeks! Yikes! I cried the whole way home...couldn't believe it. Then I went back 2 weeks later and the nurse laughed...I had "lost" 8 lbs...so you know...no one is perfect with their measurement tools!!

I've been measureing big. 30 at 22 weeks.
but ultrasound showed baby is right on size wise for due date

I "feel" I've always gotten bigger earlier with each pregnancy. I remember with my first 3, I didn't even pull out maternity clothes until around 7 months! Now? I have to get them out around 3 or 4 months.    And at this rate, I'm going to need to buy some bigger maternity clothes in a month or so. I'm outgrowing them!

How that is possible when I'm still LOSING weight or maintaining at best with this pregnancy and the baby appears right on for due date, but my uterus is just getting huge. No extra fluid. No placenta problems. It's weird. Not worrisome I guess. Just weird.

Lisa, Carole, and Kacky...thank you, it makes me feel better to know that you guys measured very big for dates, too.

I've been looking around online for "what to expect" information for pregnant mothers of large families...didn't find much, besides a few articles talking about how "dangerous" and "high risk" being a grand multipara was! Someone should write a guide called something like "What to Expect When You're Expecting Your 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th Baby."

And Carole and Anne...my dh is German, too. Maybe this is his fault!!

Seriously, the reassurance that measuring very big for dates is probaly normal is making me feel better. Thanks, everyone!

Martha, we were cross-posting...I wanted to make sure I thanked you for sharing, too. I guess this really is a mother-of-lots-of babies thing!

I am wearing maternity clothes, too. All my regular shirts are ridiculously too small. I squeezed myself into my favorite non-maternity denim skirt last weekend...and that evening when I took it off, I thought, "I'm not wearing this again!" I was yanking it up over my belly the whole day! I'm sure I looked pretty silly...the hem in front was probably shorter than the hem in back.

I and dh are both from german backgrounds too!

That's it!

I'm blaming our parents for this!

Dawn, I like that...a "What to Expect When Your Expecting your 5th, 6th...." I agree, there's not alot out there except scare tactics.

Well, I had the sonogram today.

Just one baby.

And, it looks like we're probably having another GIRL! (The tech couldn't tell for sure) I'm pretty excited. I do love little girls!
