Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can you recommend a good brand of probiotics?

I have a milk allergy, if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

Laura, would it be too much trouble to make your own kefir? Usually the kefir is ok to drink if you have a milk allergy. The probiotics in the fresh kefir are a far better quality than the pill type.

Really? It isn't lactose intolerance, but an allergy to dairy.
I can't eat yogurt either.

Would the kefir that is sold in wholefoods work? Or would I have to make my own?

I'm sorry,I wrongly assumed that you had lactose intolerance. If you can't eat yogurt than kefir would probably bother you also. If you wish, try the kefir from Wholefoods. I've read that the homemade has more probiotics, but I can't confirm that as being true.

I use one I get locally called Bifido Balance. It is made by NutriKey. It has no dairy as well as no allergens in it. I take it in capsule form but I think it also comes in a powder.

You could also try kombucha or water kefir.

We use Nature's Way, which has adult and children formulas. I don't know about dairy in relation to them.

Laura, I was at a conference a week ago with a talk given by Julie Matthews, author of Nourishing Hope and really got a lot out of her talk that you might find helpful.

She really touted the benefits of homemade sauerkraut for probiotics! I've never had sauerkraut and haven't tried her recipe yet but it is in my future. Check it out, you might find something helpful there!

I like Kombucha too, but many people don't like the taste of it. I use Shaklee's probiotics. Most food items don't deliver enough good bacteria on their own, especially if the food has sugar as one of its ingredients. If using food for a source of good bacteria, you'd definitely want to be eating a good amount of those foods daily. I thought it was easier to swallow the capsules

Garden of Life has good probiotics.

Homemade Sauerkraut and fermented pickles are other good sources. You might check out Wild Fermentation. DON'T let your children read it--the author is a mess and spews all kind of nonsense about s*xuality, but overall, it is a great overview and has lots of great recipes.

I have a good book for pickles and sauerkraut called Making Sauerkraut that has good science, but it doesn't have the variety of foods WF does.

Fwiw, I thought I hated sauerkraut until I made my own. Still don't like the storebought stuff.

Yes! They are expensive but are supposed to be some of the best out there.

Here is a link

My dh hates sauerkraut - he doesn't like cabbage in general.

I, otoh, LOVE sauerkraut! Yum! How do you eat hot dogs, or kielbasa, etc, w/o sauerkraut? (I actually am not a fan a hot dogs, but when DH wants to grill some, I have been known to eat the hot dog bun full of the fixings - sauerkraut, pickles, relish, mustard - w/o the hotdog.)
