Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

hi--

I'm having some terrible troubles with my hormonal cycle. About 2 weeks before my period I start getting terrible cramps--feels like a sledgehammer in my lower back, pain all down my legs, sometimes nausea---Then the emotions--I can get so angry in that last week, I am physically shaking, and horrified at the things that come out of my mouth against my kids. I feel like I'm going out of my mind!!

For a year I was on the depo shot (yup, birth control). Birth control was not an issue during that time, I was going through intense counseling, and dh and I chose to give my body a break in many ways--so I could do this in good conscience. HOnestly, it was wonderful. No period, no mood swings, no anger or feeling even so bad I wanted to die those last few days-----I struggled with depression and etc. my whole life, but the worst days always did co-ordinate with the last week of my menstrual cycle!

but recently, I learned that this shot causes a very early abortion, and because birth control was becoming an issue again, I went off it. Besides the fact that I would genuinely like to be open to another child. But now I'm back to feeling literally out of my mind for that last week and so much pain I'm taking lots of advil every day---I hate taking pain pills. I just feel like in the last PMS week my life spins completely out of control------and I'm really, really tempted to call the doctor right now and schedule a shot.

Do you think God understands in these situations??? That thought makes me cry. I'm not a catholic so obedience to the C. church is not the issue--my evangelical friends seem to feel like birth-control is just a given, a no-brainer-----but I've never felt like that. But I felt so much BETTER and more sane with those shots. For me it's not really about birth control, I went on them to try and gain control over emotional swings and depression. In the past I've tried alternative things (B vitamins, primrose oil, etc.) but never felt like they did anything. All this (at least today) makes me feel like I'm in a trap , having to live with a LOT of pain, but in my conscience the idea of the shot bothers me too.

BTW it has been a terrible day today emotionally and with the kids , as if you all couldn't tell!

I know some of the SSRI's are supposed to help with PMS - and they would also help with any residual depression.

I am not telling you what you should do...but....I would really be concerned about the abortificant effect of any hormonal bc methods - shots or pills. Regardless of Church teaching and you not being Catholic...I don't think it would ever be okay to knowingly do something that could be causing an abortion, even if that isn't your intent, if I am making sense.

I am so sorry you are hurting - physically & emotionally. and I hope you feel better soon.

there are doctors you could go to that wouldn't only give you the knee jerk reactions of prescribing birth control.. pro-life docs could give you a place to start.

also have you used the natural rememdies seperately and/or haphazrdly? Sometimes it's a combo that's needed and using just one and then switching may not really help. I would start with red raspberry leaf (caps or tea) just because I know it helps normalize hormones and I've personally felt it's positive effects. But I would also read Marilyn Shannon's book Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition. it could give you that bigger picture and I know she addresses PMS.

I would suggest calling the Pope Paul VI Institute. They can help with a lot of problems such as hormonal problems, PMS, and recurrent miscarriage. IT is a Catholic organization but they help all people. You don't have to live near them to get help either.

the shot is a high concentration of synthetic progesterone. I am certain that a natural, bio-identical compounded progesterone either by injection, suppository, or oral pill would help.
check with an NFP Doc. I am with you- I would get all shakey, anxiety/rage attacks from no-where, and oh the pain and cramping .
and yes, by all means try to maintain the good diet/exercise/vitamin/herbal regimin. B vitamins in high quantities, cod liver oil, enough calcium/mag, and daily exercise help me alot too...

PS meant to clarify NOT to take everyday- this would cause a potential early abortion- but to take in the last 1/3rd of your cycle only, or peak plus 3...3 days after last signs of fertility...
