is a terrible lack of commitment. I cannot for the life of me seem to keep a routine. This is causing my family to live in CHAOS, nothing to get done, and our budget to never be kept. I am finally admitting that I am guilty of sloth. (*Ouch!*) So, I am pledging to you all to get up every morning at 8:00 AM. (We are night owls in this house.) Next week I hope to add one more thing on, like lunch at noon or something.
Share with me your biggest flaw and what you are doing today to fix it. Or just say a prayer for me as I try to fix 24 years of bad habits.

I'm with you, Leah. I PM'd you with my pledge.
As we work through this, my prayers will include all who suffer from the same.
I trust that our Blessed Mother will help us.

Well, here I am. I've said my morning prayers and downed a cup of coffee. Thank you so much for your prayers and your reassurance that I am not the only one.
ETA: I was also able to get the trash down in time, since I forgot to last night! Usually I'm still asleep when they come by. Gosh, I feel so lazy in admitting this all to you. I WILL change!

Leah -- you are certainly NOT alone. The only reason I get up early is because dh loves to leave early for school and I'd never see him for quiet moments if I didn't get up!
I'm trying so hard to be more organized this year as when I'm organized, it helps my kids learn to be organized and that's a really important life skill (my paraphrasing of a much better-phrased comment Elizabeth made about her scheduling )
I am also trying to be a better shopper -- but just can't bring myself to do the week/month of recipes. Anyone have a great tip on that paticular "sin"?

Oh and I wanted to add (as soon as I hit the send button ) that sometimes ... sometimes ... it's ok to go off-schedule and live and love and learn in a spirit of "what should we do today" ... like heading to a museum exhibit you just heard about or just sitting and reading picture books all day. Those are the things the kids really remember!

I have to admit that it is, I think, because of this recent confession that unschooling is so appealing to me. I can't seem to finish a workbook or a unit study comes up that is so appealing or relevant (like the elections) or that the kids want to learn (like rockets), so we jump off the ship of The Well Trained Mind to pursue this and it is so hard to get back on track. I am trying to provide a consistent school day for my second grader and I am not succeeding.

This is soooo me. Of all the seven deadly sins, sloth is the worst one for me. Sigh.
I could lay about and veg all day. Truly. I have been trying to make a schedule for my daily activities.
7:30 - get up and pray
8:00 - make coffee for dh
brush teeth, etc
8:15 - start breakfast
8:30ish - kids up to eat
9 to 10 - clean
10 to 10:30 - ds practice instruments, I work out
11 - playtime
11-30 - oldest ds to orchestra
12:30 - lunch
1:00 - 4:30 homeschool work
4:30 - pick up and clean up
5:00 - kids play
5:30 start supper
6:00 eat supper
8:00 baths for kids
8:30 books then bed for kids
9:00 - 10:00 mom and dad hang out time
10:30 - BED!!
LOL I know this seems a bit OCD but if I do not plan like this, I get NOTHING done. NOTHING.

I was watching the Duggar family, and she has a chart similiar to Managers of Their HOmes, but she is quick to state they are GOALS for the day. They have never completed a chart perfectly for the day, but it's nice to aim for the goal to fulfill the list.
I'm like you, Leah. But I'm so bad, I'm afraid to make any commitment.

Here I am again 'early.' Two days in a row! It's almost a habit. It is so wonderful to wake up to you ladies in the peace of the morning. Thanks for holding me accountable!

I need to do this. We've got chore charts (and they mostly get done), but an hour by hour schedule just isn't "going" yet. I do "aim" for school to start @0900. So we can, God willing, be done by noon. But not today--we got a late start, and we're only just now finishing the first thing we set out to do--and its a quarter til 12. SIGH.
But we're generally on track. So we'll see how the rest of the day goes.

I am trying to get up earlier, so I can pray, exercise, shower and make my children breakfast before we leave to take my son to school.
So last night I got into bed at 10pm and I set my clock to what I thought was "real time" (instead of 30 minutes fast) and my alarm to 6:15, wanting to be up at 6:30. I fell asleep early and slept fairly well all night.
So the alarm went off when the clock said 6:15 and I pulled out my Magnificat when the clock said 6:30 only to hear my husband calling, "Better get up! It's 7:00!"
"No, it's not! It's 6:30"
He turns on his cell phone. Nope. It was 7am. My clock was already on real time, and I had set it 30 minutes BEHIND last night when I got in bed.
Sigh. No exercise today, but I did pray, shower and make my kids a good breakfast before we left. Progress???

This reminds me so much of my single mom, college days when I would close my eyes and hold the minute button down so I wouldn't know how far ahead the clock was, so I had to assume it was correct time and just get up without snoozing. Those were tired days.

Oh. ouch. sloth. um.
yeah.
<insert whiney voice here> but it's so haaaard. </end whine>
But really, I am having a time of it trying to figure our new schedule out. With DH leaving for work at 2pm, it is so hard to "do school" when they want Daddy time, he wants to play with them, and that is the only time we have for any "activities" as we only have one car and NO neighborhood kids. So, Tuesday morning = Park Day, Wed = Bowling, and Sat = Gymnastics (we have Sunday & Mondays as our weekend.)
It is so hard to start school at 2 in the afternoon. I don't feel like it (I don't sleep well, and if I lay down before DH gets home at midnite, he wakes me up accidentally, and I have a rough time going back to sleep. If I wait for him to come home, I don't fall asleep until 1 am or so. I wake up around 8, and I am ALWAYS tired. By 2 in the afternoon I don't feel like doing anything but vegetating, and now I have to START school. Blech.
I am not sure how to make this work.

Laura,
Your schedule sounds like mine. Your difficulties also sound like mine. Can't go to bed without him, but can't keep my eyes open 'til he gets home...
Thom and I have found that our biggest inhibitor is each other. Meaning we simply want to be together. Things like mowing the grass or confession are hard to do because we have to be apart to do them. Are we uniquely clingy or is this somewhat normal? And if you experience it, how do you control it?

My biggest sin is time on the computer. I am on way too much, accomplish very little while I am on, and am less patient with my children.
We would be a sloth-like family if it was not for my daycare children.
5:00 - get up, shower, coffee
5:50 - daycare kids arrive
7:00 - breakfast (wake anyone still sleeping at 6:45)
8:00 - take daycare child to school
8:15 - homeschool
9:30 - snack
10:00 - finish school
11:30 - prepare lunch
noon - lunch
12:20 - rest time (ah - so quiet!)
2:00 - wake anyone still asleep
2:35 - daycare child goes home
2: 45 - snacl
4:45 - start dinner
5:15 - eat
5:45 - Atrium (hubby likes to be here for that)
6:45 - snack
7:00 - teeth and stories
8:00 - hopefully all kids are asleep
11:00 - bedtime for me
