Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have a 2yo Labrador and an 8 month old sh*tzu/Chihuahua.
I'd like to make my own dog food, and have some great ideas, but in my reading I have heard some conflicting information about onions.
Some say they are great in the dog food as they help keep fleas at bay, whilst others say the onions cause stomach upsets.

Does anyone make their own dog food? What do you use?

Jenny,

I do not make my own dog food, but I have read onions are toxic to dogs....along with other things like chocolate.

Please forgive my ignorance on the subject, but would you mind sharing why it's beneficial to make dog food vs. purchasing. That comes from a person who doesn't enjoy cooking (too many picky eaters) so I get a bit tired thinking about cooking for my dog.

Now, if I ever did...Rhonda has some recipes on her site (that you may or may not have already seen).

I started making my own dog food about a year ago, but I got busy with other things around Christmas and went back to tins (mixed with dry dog food).
We have a beautiful cream Labrador and when I looked at slimming down our food budget I could see that a good deal of money was being spent on tinned dog food. We decided to look at a healthier and cheaper alternative, and this resulted in our making fresh dog food from kangaroo meat - this is plentiful, very cheap, and very healthy as it has virtually no fat.
Our dog was overweight by 17 kilograms, so it was very important that we do all we could to slim him down slowly and bring his health up to peak. Making our own dog food again proved to be the best option.

I read up a lot on it and came up with my own mix of minced kangaroo meat, barley, rice, carrots, peas, and garlic. You don't cook the meat, just the other ingredients then mix them through the raw meat. Apparently garlic is a great flea repellent, but I was also told that onions were too. However, I've read conflicting reports on onions so I did not add them in.

Now we're streamlining the budget again and I want to get back to making his food myself.

Btw, his coat was glossier and he just looked healthier overall when he was having the home-made food.
