Does anyone have a suggestion for a good medical reference book? I am looking for a book that doesn't send me running to the doctor for a prescription for every little thing - I guess I'm looking for a home remedy medical book. I would like to to contain simple first aid, how to identify and treat hives, poison ivy, insect bites, etc. (OK, we've had a lot of this in the house lately, which is causing my desire for this type of book to have on hand ). I don't mind suggestions like take an antihistamine or something like that, but do we really need this prescription for Allegra for a 4 year old with hives? Did my 9 year old with poison ivy NEED a prescription for a steroid. I don't think so. Anyway, any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!
God bless,
Christine

We have Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child and we really love it. The book is mostly broken down by ailment and it lists common symptoms along with conventional treatment, homeopathic treatment, nutritional treatment, and general recommendations. It also says when you should call a doctor. It's been a very helpful book for the whole family. I just noticed that the same authors have a book on "Healthier Living" and "A Family's Guide to Medical Emergencies." Might add those to my wishlist.

That one looks good, Susan. I really am looking for the more home-remedy type book (natural remedy) and this one looks like it contains that and more! I'll have to check it (and the others) out
THANK YOU!
If anyone has others to share, please do
God bless,
Christine

My faves are "Homeopathic Medicine at Home" by Maesimund B. Panos, MD and Jane Heimlich and "An Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants" by Mary Bove, ND.
I've been reading "How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor" by Dr. Mendelsohn (library book) and I think I'm actually going to purchase it if there is a newer edition.

I have a book called "The People's Pharmacy Guide to Home and Herbal Remedies" by Joe and Teresa Graedon. I got it several years ago as a gift (and I am guiltily admitting that I haven't really used or read it much), but now that you bring it up I think I will look through it more closely. It looks pretty interesting and has a lot of home remedies and herbal stuff.

I have the Reader's Digest book: The Healing Power of Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs: The A-Z Guide to Enhancing Your Health and Treating Illness with Nutritional Supplements
Part I is "Ailments".
Under each it gives the symptoms, when to call the dr., what it is, what causes it, how supplements can help, what else you can do.
Part II is "Supplements".
Common Uses, forms of, what it is, what it does, how to take it, possible side effects. There are also shopping hints, latest findings, case histories, Cautions, and Did You Know? boxes throughout the book.

My library has the vast majority of all of these recommended books. Thank you SO MUCH! Now I just have to decide which one(s) we'll buy to keep on hand for reference.
God bless,
Christine
