Is there anything I can do to help minimize a strong pregnancy gag reflex? It is driving me nuts! Any and all advice welcome

Donna -

I feel for you. Other than the passage of time (getting over that *yucky* phase), I never found anything that worked. My biggest problem was when brushing molars. I certainly cancelled dental check-ups that had been scheduled before I knew I was pregnant. Otherwise, I wonder whether rinsing with Listerine to kill the germs that cause cavities would work better than brushing those back teeth, if tooth-brushing is a problem area for you. That's probably really bad dental hygiene advice though ...

Peace,
Nancy

Thank you so much Molly and Nancy!

Molly, I slept WONDERFULLY last night...for a rare treat!! I actually dreamed that I gave birth...It was at home and didn't hurt at all. I remember not feeling pregnant after that in my dream and I thought..."WOW! THAT was EASIER than I thought it would be!!"...the baby was the size of a 3 month old...LOL!...gotta love those pregnancy dreams.

God love you!

I feel for you too! I have the same problem when pregnant. At the dentist they always tell me to breathe slowly and deeply through my nose to lessen the gag reflex, so that's what I try to do when pg to brush my teeth, etc. (plus brush really quicly, LOL) It gains me a few extra seconds, at least.

I found that using less toothpaste and spitting more frequently helps, too.

That, and leaning over the sink. Instead of being upright, let all the foam and spit just dribble out of the mouth.

And don't brush the tongue during this phase.

Is the gag related to smells, too? What chemo patients do for nausea is hold a lemon near the nose.

Donna,

I would have this all the time too. I had trouble even talking at times do to it and would sometimes get "stranded" on the phone without being able to say another word to the person for fear or getting sick! (This was quite interesting when I worked on the phone for awhile. ) Anyway, try to drink, and I know this sounds silly, but try to think of something else when you are about to face a "trigger" situation. If confronting the fridge makes you think about gagging or feel like that (which it did in my case) then think about skiing on a cold mountain. If you are brushing your teeth, quickly think of flowers in a meadow or a song or whatever gets you distracted. For some reason, this helped me to really try to distract myself. If I was on the phone and it happened, it helped to run and stuff in a piece of bread or a cracker while the person sat there wondering where I had gone!!! This way I could at least tell them, "morning sickness..will call you back" . How embarrasing, huh???

Anyway, good luck. Keep candy and gum around too!! I almost forgot that. I chewed so much Big Red that my mouth got sore and full of canker sores when I had this going on. So, try some other type!!!

It seems the worst for me is some extra goop in my throat at times. If I clear my throat too hard...watch out!   I have a steady supply of natural lozenges to help give me the allusion that my throat is not annoying me and a suck on one for a little while just so I can get to sleep.

I have a hard time realizing that I am only just starting week 10...this baby is already a lot of work! October seems sooo far away... I still have to get through allergy season and hope that my weird throat condition does not return and restrict my breathing and revive those awful choking feelings...but who is jumping the gun..not me! At least I know that I am allowed to give birth standing on my head (my new midwife said so! )
Thank you all soooo much for the help!! I feel loved!

God love you!

Donna Marie:
That "goop in your throat" comment made me think about the Tons of Saliva that I experienced with this pregnancy.

It seemed that the strong gag reflex and the nausea were decreased for me once I stopped swallowing the extra saliva in my mouth.....in your case your describing it as "goop".....so I dont' know if we're talking about the same thing, but I thought I'd mention it in case they may be related for you.

I'm 33 weeks and STILL chewing my gum constantly.
